Newark to Florence to Capri to Rome to Newark

I would like to spend three days (8/23-27) in Florence, then would like to travel to Capri (8/27-30) with a return to Newark from the Rome airport (Fiumicino). What would be the most convenient way to travel to reach these destinations in the given time frame? Or, am I dreaming?

  1. Fly EWR-FRA-FLR on Lufthansa or EWR-MUC-FLR on Lufthansa or EWR-CDG-FLR on Air France or EWR-FCO-FLR on Alitalia or EWR-ZUR-FLR on Swiss. Or fly EWR-FCO on Alitalia or Continental, then proceed to Florence by Trenitalia AV train in 95 minutes (connecting at Roma Termini after 32 minute ride from FCO on the "Leonardo" express train).

  2. Trenitalia "Frecciarossa" AV train from Florence to Naples in 3 hrs.

  3. Taxi from Naples Centrale Station to Molo Beverello in 10 minutes

  4. Hydrofoil from Naples Beverello to Capri (or car ferry from nearby Calata di Massa dock) 50 or 90 minute crossing.

  5. Hydrofoil or ferry back to Naples

  6. Taxi back to Naples Centrale Station

  7. Trenitalia AV, ES or IC train to Roma Termini Station (time varies from 70 to 120 minutes)

  8. Roma Termini Station to FCO via Trenitalia "Leonardo" express: 32 minutes

  9. FCO-EWR on Alitalia or Continental

(Your flights must be on the same airline or codeshare partner in both directions. That makes it very difficult, for example, to fly Lufthansa or Swiss eastbound, then Alitalia westbound.)

ANOTHER POSSIBILITY (useful if you want to fly Lufthansa in both directions):

Fly EWR-MUC-FCO or EWR-FRA-FCO. Visit Rome. Train Rome to Naples. Visit Capri. Train Naples-Florence. Fly FLR-MUC-EWR ot FLR-FRA-EWR on Lufthansa. Another option is to fly first to FLR via MUC or FRA, then train to Naples, visit Capri, then train to Rome, then fly back to EWR via MUC or FRA. I don't know whether you would be able to mix Lufthansa with Continental such as to fly Continental nonstop EWR/FCO or FCO/EWR in one direction, and Lufthansa to or from FLR in the other direction.

I wouldn't do it. You'll spend a lot of your time on the train. I would do 3 nights in Florence and the rest in Rome or 3 nights on Capri and the rest in Rome. Getting from Florence to Capri will basically take the whole day when you factor in checking out of the hotel, getting to the train station, waiting for your train, getting to Naples Centrale, transfering to the dock, waiting for the hydrofoil, getting to the Island and checking into the hotel. For such a short trip you should save one of the cities for later.
