I don't usually go through Newark but am looking at some different options. January flight with 2 hrs 8 minutes connection... any thoughts? Greenville SC-Newark-Rome. Thanks in advance.
Linda, I don't actually need it, but it would have been very helpful to know the names of the two airlines. That would let a knowledgeable reader know if you need to change terminals. It is also important to know if your luggage will be checked "through" to Rome when you check in in Greenville. This is a problem if the traveler has bought two tickets separately, in an attempt to score some kind of savings. I'm assuming you are a US citizen.
While Newark NJ (EWR) is a rather obsolete airport, they do have an automated monorail Airtrain shuttle between terminals, and I don't see this as a risky layover. I have waited as long as 1/2 hour in the Terminal C security line (for United flights to Europe.)
Have you ever taken a similar two-segment flight? Have you used these two airlines before? Are you a member of their clubs, with online identity (like passport number) stored? The issue is whether you are going to be given TWO boarding passes or not, in Greenville. It's really important that you check in online for the second flight as early as you can, but online (as opposed to physical) check-ins are often restricted for Passport-required flights. That would be an additional, nasty, line in Newark, even if you don't have to re-check your luggage. What month of the year, and time of day?
I will say that there have been times when I was given a second boarding pass in advance, but had to have it replaced at the connecting airport. But that can sometimes be done at the flight-Gate desk, where the line is usually trivial. The issue is whether the boarding pass is "valid" enough to satisfy the TSA at the Security line.
EDIT: Whatever airlines they are, it's useful to check "yesterday's" terminals/gates and actual departure times online (airline website-Check Flights tab or something like that), to get an idea of the terminals and gates they are likely (not guaranteed ... ) to use for arrivals and departures. The information empowers you.
I'm assuming it's United. Going to Rome I think, on my experience via EWR, 2 hrs are fine (if the flight from Greenville is on time). The reverse (coming from Rome) would be tight, because you have to clear immigration and customs (baggage retrieval) at EWR, the first port of entry to the US>
As Tim said, knowing what airlines you're flying would be helpful. There is a strong assumption that you're flying United as Newark is a central hub for them to use as your layover. If that's the case, nearly all of United flights (both domestic & international) fly out of Terminal C, in which case your gate change COULD be as short as 5-15 mins (depending on which of the 3 'wings' of Terminal C you have to walk to). Newark doesn't run "domestic" vs "international" terminals like other airports. The terminals are split mostly by airline. Customs/immigration is handled by funneling travelers to different parts of the terminal (e.g., immigration is on 2nd floor in Terminal C, while all domestic travel is on 1st floor).
I actually just flew out of Newark to EU (Amsterdam) 2 weeks ago. I'm based out of Newark though, so I didn't have to do a layover.
I flew United and using the app had all my documents uploaded prior to my flight. Then I did check in 24-hrs prior, and went to the luggage drop at the airport to drop my luggage. Then straight on to security, where I have TSA Precheck and cleared it in 3 mins. Then 10 min walk to my gate. So for me, it took me about 20 mins to get out of my cab to arrive at my gate. And they actually never asked to see me in person to check my documents/passport. (Unfortunately.. my flight then had mechanical issues, had to change planes, etc.. so my flight took off 6 hrs late)
We had a 1:50 hr layover at Newark going from SFO to VCE last week. No problem. I always follow Tim’s tip and check arrival/departure times/gates on the airport website...helps me sleep the nite before.

We fly Greenville Spartanburg(GSP) connecting in Newark(EWR) regularly and would think that 2+ hr layover would be adequate not withstanding some unforeseen delay. Ex. Our recent flight from Greenville we departed the gate early but had to hold our takeoff for 45 minutes in Greenville owing to a hold the FAA had on flights into the New York metro airspace. You might be aware United reduced its flight schedule from Newark a while back to alleviate some of the congestion. Happy Travels.
