New Year's in Rome; Epiphany in Venice...What's Open?

Hello Everyone.

My wife and I are taking our daughter and my mom to Italy over the holidays this year. We will be in Rome on New Year's Day, and in Venice on 6 January (Epiphany). Does anyone have any sightseeing suggestions that will be open/available on both days in both cities? Or, if everything is closed and the trains are running, should we use New Year's as a travel day to Florence?

Thanks a million...in advance,

ciao,

peter

Hi,
I spent new years in rome last year with my finace. New years eve was fun, the entire city celebrated all through the night. We went to the trevi fountain and saw the fire works from there with mostly locals... i'll never forget it!
To answer your question, just about everything was closed on new years day in Rome. We walked the entire city only to find out everything was closed for the holiday. We had planned to see the vatican that day and were suprised to see a new years day parade there as well as thousands of people in st peters square to see the pope give new years mass and a speech... better to see it on a less crowded day! May want to travel to Florence that day.
Happy traveling!
