Has anyone spent New Year's in Lucca? My husband and I and our four kids (ages 10-17) will be there over New Year's and I'd love some ideas or even just descriptions of how most of the town celebrates. Thanks!
There's a website in Italian with Lucca Capodanno Events listed. https://www.capodannolucca.it/capodanno-lucca-in-piazza-in-centro-storico.html The Christmas and New Year's celebrations get smooshed together because the Italian Xmas period goes until the arrival of the Befana the evening of Jan. 5 and the Epiphany Jan. 6.
From my favorite Lucca blog in English --- https://www.twopartsitaly.com/blog/2016/12/28/buon-capodanno-happy-new-year-from-italy
We spent New Year’s in Lucca and it was lovely. The town feels festive but not crowded, which is great for families. Many restaurants offer special dinners, so book ahead. Around midnight people gather in Piazza San Michele or Piazza Napoleone for music, fireworks, and a toast. It’s lively but still has that small-town charm. New Year’s Day is quiet and perfect for a walk on the city walls.
That is all so helpful. Thank you!
Just generically when in Lucca...
The grapevine is the magazine for all things happening in town. Even if you don't buy the magazine their on-line guide is a month by month itinerary: https://www.luccagrapevine.com/ Click "What's On & other info"
There are several other site: https://eventi.turismo.lucca.it/en/, https://www.luccawhatson.com/
For whatever reason Italians are terrible at promoting things but great at telling you want you missed out on. You really need to dig and pay attention to find out what's happening. In Lucca pay close attention to the flyers posted around - especially for musical events - because they often are not posted elsewhere.
Have a great time,

Many locals in the piazzas, fireworks at midnight. Perfect New Year atmosphere in my opinion.
"For whatever reason Italians are terrible at promoting things but great at telling you want you missed out on." Ha ha!
That is wonderful help! Thank you, all!
