New Year's in Italy?

We have just decided to extend our trip and leave for Italy early and be there for New Year's. Any suggestions on places to spend New Year's eve from experience? We are planning on checking out Sorrento and returning to Florence before a week driving around Tuscany at the end of our trip.

My wife and I were in Venice for New Year's Eve 2 years ago and loved it. Big celebration in St. Mark's Piazza: music, light show, etc.

Rome is pretty terrific on New Year's Eve. Everyone sets off their own fireworks. If you can get to the top of one of the hills to watch, it's an amazing display. One caution however, people throw crockery and other stuff out their windows. You have to be careful not to get hit. Palermo is even better. The main square is filled with people in folk costumes, dancers, singers, musicians, and circus performers. At midnight, everyone cracks open their champagne and toasts the new year.

Thank you for the suggestions.

I am also now considering the Cinque Terre. We have been there many times in the Spring, so it would be fun to see it in a differnt season. I know many things may be closed, but have been assured by a local that not everything will be.
