Been throughout Italy numerous times, including NYE in Venice a few years ago. This year considering Rome and/or Amalfi Coast to base ourselves for this brief break. What can we expect from weather in both places? Which coastal town for that time of year? Are shops and restaurants open, or would things be dead? Does a day trip to Capri make sense? We love to hike--would the weather be reasonable (cool fine, but not raining or snowing) in January? Also, if we choose to do a day trip to Heracleum or Pompeii, is it easier to go from Rome or Amalfi coast? Don't want to base in Naples. Thanks everyone!
I was going to say Naples until I got to your last sentence. I could be off base, but I just don't think the AC would be good at that time of year. If you stay in a city like Naples or Salerno, you have the option if you get a great weather day.
You can check typical weather on a site like wunderground.
I find Rome to Pompeii too far for a day trip (though doable), and some parts of the AC are easier to reach Pompeii from than others--the towns at the mainland end would work (e.g., Vietri).
Both are mild but subject to rain. I always found Christmas week to be rather pleasant overall. And it never seems to rain ALL DAY anyway.
The AC could be nice. We have been in December for a week and loved it. Pompeii was quiet when we went, early in the month. I was told by our hotel that they were 100% booked from December 20-January 6, which is Epiphany. So it will nto be locked down and lacking tourist services.
