I will be doing Venice & Munich between Xmas and January 6. Does anyone know what's up New Years day in Venice? Do things close earlier in Dec 31? Should I consider the day train to Munich Jan 1? Thanks!

For new year's eve: concert, midnight kiss, fireworks, bellinis, lots of people at Piazza San Marco. And sometimes, acqua alta!

yes..many many people in San Marco. About 15,000 or more. We were there in 2010. Be prepared. The crowds start early. It took us two hours to get out of the square and to Piazza Roma to catch a taxi to our hotel. Once out of the square, we had to wait another 2 hours for a taxi!! Beyond that, it was magical. Most stores we open until around 9-10pm. If you want dinner, make reservations EARLY!! Many restaurants charge more on NYE!
