New Year's Eve at Colosseum or Piazza del Popolo

Hello, I will be in Rome for NYE and am wondering where I should be. I am traveling with my boyfriend, who is a very experienced traveler and has concerns about us being out front of the Colosseum or Piazza del Popolo due to the crowds. I have been reading about these areas during NYE and they seem to be very crazy with people throwing their own fireworks into the crowd, throwing glass bottles in every direction, I even read a story about someone getting cut in the head with a glass bottle. I've recently been looking in to a rooftop restaurant where we can celebrate but they are so expensive! So my question is, has anyone joined in on the celebrations at these locations? Can you offer any advice? Is there somewhere else I can go to still have fun and see fireworks without the crazy crowd? Thanks!

New Year 2012 in Venice, Italy Those who choose to spend New Year´s Eve 2012 in Venice, "Festa di San Silvestro", you can join the crowd in St Mark's Square, where the bell-tower of St. Mark gives the stroke of midnight. You can watch the fireworks, a beautiful show of color and brightness, the toast with sparkling wine and romantic kiss collective.
Imagine watching the sunrise of the new year 2012, in the romantic city of Venice! It would be wonderful, no doubt. For good luck, do not forget the underwear new year red. Be sure to leave the area before the stroke of midnite...it took me 3 hours to go only 2 blocks. It is magical!!

I have been in Rome for NYE. I was worried about the crazy crowds so we rang in the new year at what we were told would be a "quieter" celebration at Piazza Quirinale - a classical music concert in front of the President's Palace. We saw a lot of people lighting off fireworks and throwing bottles. We were uncomfortable and felt, "it's always fun until somebody loses an eye!" But I have to admit we saw no one get hurt. We even saw young children shooting off Roman Candles from their hands (well, they ROMAN candles and we were in Rome). What to do? A lot will depend on your comfort level. Friends of mine stayed in Rome and they have a great time with a room facing the street, safely watching the locals celebrate. Expect most of the city center to turn in to a pedestrian zone so where you celebrate the New Year should also take in to consideration where your hotel is located.
