Suzanne, whether the "tourist attractions" you want to see will be within walking distance from any hotel in Rome depends on what you consider walkable. We have rarely taken public transit during our stays in the city but we are BIG walkers able to cover a lot of ground in a day. I've seen posters describe central Rome as a "huge city" but we think it's reasonably compact compared to, say, London or Manhattan. At least the attractions most visitors want to see are within do-able reach on foot unless one isn't much of a walker.

With limited time you may want to acquaint yourself with the public transit system, though. Which attractions to see? Entirely up to you and the time that you have. Michael gave you a good place to start, and some time with a guidebook will be well spent so you can choose what appeals to YOU.

I second hotel Smeraldo - note correct spelling. 10-20 minute walks to places like the main Piazzas, the Pantheon, the VE Monument, the Colosseum, forum etc. Tight but comfortable rooms, nice modern bathrooms, breakfast included, a nice deli/bakery down the street, a couple of decent restaurants on the same street, close to Largo Argentina, site of Cesear’s assasination, cat sanctuary, and transportation hub. Easy to get to areas like Trastevere by tram. I would stay there again. Check it out on Booking.com but book directly with the hotel, often cheaper and usually have rooms when Booking.com is indicating no rooms. I had a nice single room with a small terrace and great view over the roofs of Rome!
