This is especially good news. Norwegian Air Shuttle also has an extensive intra-Europe flight schedule which would allow you to fly home through other European gateway cities--other than backtracking to Rome.
Newark is probably the preferred airport for international (European) flights out of the NYC area, and it's easy to get there to changeover to Norwegian.
