Air Italy is starting up 2 new routes in April 2019, one from LAX to Milan, the other SFO to Milan. Each operates 3X weekly. Flight times available here. I did a dummy booking for random dates in April and prices started about $350 one-way.
It’s the former Meridiana, now renamed Air Italy and 49% owned by Qatar Airways.
In July a r/t SFO to MXP is $1,014 with one checked bag.
I wished I had known before I purchased my ticket with AirFrance. Would have saved $200 and a lay over at CDG.
Does anyone know how this airline is? I had quite a few bad experiences with Alitalia and am a little hesitant.
There are also new Norwegian non-stop flights to Rome from LAX and BOS as well as other US cities. They are seasonal some starting April 1, I think.
Haven’t used Air Italy since Meridiana totally rebranded itself with the new name (and as Qatar Airways as new minority stakeholder) last February (Air Italy was just a brand of Meridiana which Meridiana created in 2013 for their long haul routes).
I’ve used Meridiana a few times within Europe some years ago, and I had no complaints. Since it’s using some planes from Qatar’s fleet, I presume it’s probably better now.
Air Italy is currently using five A330-200 for their transatlantic flights, which plans to replace in 2019 with 30 brand new B787-8 Dreamliner.
Obviously they plan to expand their long haul offerings out of their new hub at Milan Malpensa (MXP).
Their mission, they said, is to replace Alitalia as Italy’s flag carrier.
