Nephew moving to Italy in April

Auntie is worried about him being so far away. Smaller towns outside of Rome, want people to move there provide a service or open a business.

I hope he does well in Italy, and I hope you get to visit him there sometime.

Taking a stab at this....

Smaller towns outside of Rome, want people to move there provide a
service or open a business.

kahelina, do you mean he's moving to one of the dying Italian towns offering abandoned homes for as little as 1 euro if you fix them up, raise your family in them and/or open a business (requirements differ per town)? A couple of news articles linked below plus a prior RS forum thread on the subject with a LOT of info:

Thing is, you don't just "move" to Italy. If he's a US citizen, there are stringent requirements regarding just establishing residency plus much other footwork that has to be accomplished before being able to stay more than the 90 days out of every 180 allowed under the visa waiver. So quite a lot of info is missing here! Italy is a very nice, very safe country - not much to worry about there - but he's not "moving" anytime soon unless he's met the requirements. If he doesn't speak Italian, language could also be a much bigger barrier that it often isn't when just traveling, and there are taxes and health insurance and utilities....

Kahelina, are you talking about the new tax incentives for entrepreneurs? Sounds like a great opportunity to me, but then I'm moving to Italy in May to take advantage of the new tax incentives for retirees, so I might be a wee bit biased. This is not about the 1 Euro houses, though that could be added on if desired (not me!)

My 88-year-old auntie can't wait to come visit me this fall. Maybe you should go check out his new home?

Thank you, he has jumped through all the hoops with the consulate and was approved. He did his homework.

I am very excited about this next chapter of his 29 year old life. I can't wait to visit him. I trust his judgement. I just wanted some more information on my end. Thanks for the extra resources.

Ah, excellent to hear that he's already navigated a lot of hoops successfully! This forum has seen its share of folks who have no idea that they can't just pick up and move, willynilly, without quite a lot of prior research and lots of hoops, thus the cautions. :O)

Yes, how very exciting for the both of you! I hope he gets settled quickly so it won't be long before you can visit!
