Neighborhoods in Rome

Which neighborhood in Rome should we get a hotel in? We are looking for something that is close to the main tourist attractions.

We loved the convenience of Termini and stayed at aromabb.it

We had a room with terrace, little kitchen/seating area, separate bedroom. 100E in March.

We stayed at the Hotel Modigliani (also listed in Rick Steves guidebook) and absolutely loved it. Great location-5 minute walk to spanish steps, less than 10 min. to both Trevi fountain and the Borghese Villa (nice park.)and Via Veneto. Super helpful staff, nice breakfast, clean rooms (we got the room with a small balcony which was quaint, overlooking the small garden courtyard) 120 E's per night. I would definitely go back!

A lot of people stay near the Termini train station, but being close to public transport is it's only real draw. That area is noisy and busy. If you want a quiet, neighborhood atmosphere, try Trastevere. It is across the Tiber River from the ancient sites and the city center is easily accessible via Tram 8. You will love Trastevere.

We stayed at the same hotel as Karen (above) 3 years ago. It was in a great location on a quiet street. They gave us list of wonderful local restaurants to eat at. We gave our cab driver from the train station, the name and address on a piece of paper to help him find the street. I took the hop on and off bus from down the street from the hotel the first day. Buffet breakfast every day, and I took pieces of fruit for lunch time snack. Staff was very helpful. We took a bottle of wine into their little enclosed garden our last night in Rome. I wish I had known about the Family suite on the top floor with it's own balcony overlooking a view of the city. If we ever get back to Rome, I would want to stay there, even if it is just the 2 of us. Their web site is - http://www.hotelmodigliani.com/index.htm

The area most convenient to most major tourist sites is Campo de Fiori / Pantheon / Piazza Navona. But Rome is very compact and has very good public transportation, so there are lots of options.

We love Piazza Navona. We've got an apartment this year and are looking forward to exploring all the side streets!

We stayed in an apartment maybe 60 yards from Piazza Navona. It was great. The Piazza really came to life at night. And while we never ate the more expensive restaurants on the piazza there are some great restaurants and cafes within a few blocks in every direction.

We stayed in an apartment near Campo de' Fiori and loved it. Piazza Navona is very close. We walked to the Vatican, Pantheon, Trevi fountain, Spanish Steps, Borgese Gallery and the Colosseum. Also very close to the Jewish Ghetto. We spent 4 nights and never used public transportation. There was always so much to see that the walks never felt that long.
Have a great time!

Hi Steve

We were in Rome for our first vist for four nights in April and stayed at Hotel Nerva. Found it through Rick`s receommendations. Great and I mean great central location -we walked to every major Roman tourist attraction(and walked there from train station as well.

Its in the Imperial Forum area and the Colleseum is visible from the street out front. Great staff, mediocre breakfast, clean comfortable rooms.

We enjoyed haviong a room in back with small private patio area , good for a quiety drink at the end of the day. I think it was room 4(had nice sized bath -a rarity in this hotel from what I read.

Anyway-read the reviews and best wishes for great trip

Mike

I agree that Campo Fiori is a great location and a very short walk to the Pantheon which is central. The Termini area lacks charm and not convenient to major sights, restaurants, etc.
