Neighborhood southeast of Coliseum

I am on the verge of renting an apartment on Via dei SS Quattro, near the junction with via Celimontana just southeast of the Coliseum. I know its not in the center of things, but like the idea of being near the Coliseum and Forum. However, on one of the Forums there was a comment that made me think some of the streets in the area were less than desirable as a place to stay.
Can anyone tell me what the neighborhood is like, and maybe the pros and cons are of staying there. Thanks a lot!

I just checked it out myself through Google Maps. Turns out we'll be taking a self-guided tour right through there when we visit Rome for the third time, this May. That particular neighborhood is well situated between two smallish parks and is near a lot of churches with some amazing art. It's not where I would pick for a first time visit to Rome, though, since it's outside the triangle formed by the Spanish Steps/ Campo de' Fiori/ Colosseum areas. That general area is the standard recommendation for a first visit to Rome. However, your n'hood (I think it's called Laterano) is quite charming and surprisingly free of graffiti (for Rome). It looks very safe, but then so is virtually all of Rome. There's a restaurant there that we're planning to try - Le Naumachie. If you decide to stay there, you will probably love it. (By the way, the street is actually Via dei SS Quattro Coronati - named after a very imposing looking church in the area.)

Have you tried using Google maps? Type in the address, then drag the little person icon over to that spot and drop them there. You'll instantly be on the street looking around. It's an amazing travel planning tool. Have fun.

I'm with Michael - I'd have NO problems staying here. On my first visit, I stayed 7 blocks away in what is very much considered a great place for a tourist's hotel...so you're hardly way off the beaten path, nor does your area look scary in any way. It looks nice and quiet, actually - it you're into that LOL! I am! There are some people who want to be in the middle of the 'touristy' stuff, and think that's the only way to go. I personally would rather stay a bit away from the tourist zone - I don't want to hear the restaurants, night clubs, and tourists (drunk revelers or not) making their (loud) way home. For a great way to blow ALOT of time (LOL!), DO check out Google Street View. If you're not clear on how to get there, please post again or send me a PM and I'll help you with Street View. I want alot of company on The Dark Side with me LOL.

I will check out Google Street View, though my landlady said to use Map Quest instead as Google consistently misreads the SS " calling it via di Strada Statale owing to ambiguity of SS. Mapquest gets it right." I have booked the apartment, even though its a little out of the way. Hopefully, public transportation will be adequate from there, though she did recommend a taxi from the airport.
Thanks for all your replies!!

Your choice, of course, but Mapquest's 360 view doesn't have anywhere near the coverage that Google's Streetview does. At least in Rome, Mapquest gets only the most major of streets. Just try to use Mapquest's 360 view for the street that your hotel is on. Then try Google Maps. Happy travels.

Thanks, I did view my street on Google Street; my landlady was right, it is labeled as she said, but it doesn't really matter as long as I know how it's labeled. I can see what you mean about it being a timeconsuming device. I'm afraid I'll be walking all the streets of Rome, vicariously! Thank you so much. I love seeing life stopped in mid-track a world away.

Oh, the hours spent 'walking' the (Google) Streets of Paris... Elane, Welcome to The Dark Side ;-) Have a great time in Roma!

And by the way... 'Regular people' can send Google corrections to their maps - you should see where they used to have the Venice train station...the trains would've needed pontoons.
