We are looking for a great place in Rome to stay for a week or two. Can anyone recommend a great neighborhood? Something with a real sense of living in Rome. Walkable to most areas. Full of cafes. Thanks
My preference is the Trastevere, lots of places to eat and neighborhood shops serving locals. Some think it to be out of the way, but I always found it easy walking distance into central Rome (Campo di Fiori, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon)
Many recommend stayin right in central Rome, but I think after a week or two that might get a bit hectic, sometimes a bit of distance does wonders.
Definitely Trastevere. Two votes so far.
Be aware that Trastevere is a big district. Try to be near Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere near the north end of Viale di Trastevere (viale=boulevard). That way you can walk to places more easily or take the no. 8 tramway.
I would agree with Roberto, the area near the River on Via Trastevere, The trastevere does stretch quite a ways West, but you want to be East, near Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, even South of Via Trastevere is good. I would look for an apartment, I have been there a couple times for a week at a time, stayed at Hotel Trastevere, but I think a kitchenette in an apartment would be nice option.
Campo dei Fiori area is good. Just try not to be smack dab on the Campo itself due to noise. Look around Largo Argentina. West or North of Piazza Navona is good also.
Trastevere, especially around Santa Maria in Trastevere, is very tourist-packed at night. I am not sure that is the best area for s longer stay. The neighborhoods around the Vatican might be good.
I like the Piazza Navona/Pantheon/Campo dei Fiori area, and slso the Monti area across from the Colosseo.
Loved, loved, loved Campo dei Fiori.
My friend Zoe nailed it. Trastevere is so busy with tourists at night in the high season that the predominant language is English.
I suggest Prati. It is an upper-end neighborhood, but lots of shops and cafes, handy to transportation, walkable to Piazza Navona and the Vatican. There are buses, trams and the Metro serving Prati.
My neighborhood of Parioli is nice, but it takes a long time to walk to the sights except for Galleria Borghese.
I would second the vote for the Prati district. You are walking distance to the Vatican and St. Peters and we find we walk most other places - and there are good bus and tram connections - we especially like the Route 40 which you can pick up at Castel Sant Angelo , because it is an express you are into the centre quickly (by Rome standards).
The Prati neighbourhood has lots of cafe, restaurants, shops and services. We always feel like we have come home - not touristy at all.
