Neighborhood advised need asap! Rome

Hi all. I know there are many people here who have been to Rome many times and I need some advice for a 13 night stay next late-September. Here are the pieces of the puzzle:

  • 2 couples - my husband and myself together with my sister and brother-in-law
  • both couples are mid-60s; one of us currently a little more back-challenged but with some treatment this winter, that is, hopefully, going to resolve.
  • Both couples are good walkers (my husband and I are NYers).
  • My husband and I have been to Rome twice before and stayed in a tourist-center hotel (Teatro di Pompeo - if that helps orient).
  • My sister and bil have not been to Rome ever.
  • We are thinking of getting a 2BR apartment and I have to lead the charge for recommendations. My husband prefers not to stay in the dead-center tourist area (meaning where we stayed before) but we both understand that a great central location would be great for my sister.

We're looking at apartments in:

1, Piazza Navone -
2. Campo Di Fiore (I was up at 2am thinking this was a bad idea for 13 nights because there would likely be trucks in and out to service the market). The one we are looking at is on VIA DEI GIUBBONARi.
3. Monti: I know it's called the "Brooklyn of Rome" but, I suspect they mean the 'Williamsburg of Rome' as I live n Brooklyn and I think they mean hipster vs. where I live in Brooklyn!!!! I keep thinking I don't like that a) it's 25 min walk into center and b) near Coliseum (sorry - but I've had crud great experiences in that very local section). Plus side: closer to subway, Termini (is that a good thing? - we are going to do at least 2 day trips by train) and potentially a not horrible loud more 'real' neighborhood.), some cool new more-local restaurants (vs. some of the real super-tourist places in center).
4. Trastevere: booking in Trastevere puts the fear of whomever in me - I have nightmares we'll be over or across from some nightclub - I'm a great city person but cannot deal with midnight nightclub music reverberating through my apartment. But the neighborhood is cool!

So....please. any and all opinions needed. and thank you so much. I have to make this decision as soon as possible.

In the Trastevere, as long as you are not in the area from Piazza Santa Maria to the river you will be fine. There are probably places even in that area that are fine, but more of a toss up. The bigger issue would be restaurants busy until midnight than nightclubs, and noise from the pedestrian traffic.

I always found the area around Piazza di San Cosimato to be nice. Only a few blocks from Piazza Santa Maria, but a world of difference in character, much more local, more families.

On 2 trips to Rome, we stayed in Trastevere the first time (nine years ago), and Testaccio the second (which was two months ago). Each time was for a week, and we stayed in an apartment. Check Vrbo.com . For 2 couples, perhaps a 2-bedroom apartment might work well, especially with a second bedroom. Would having a kitchen help - for making and having breakfast, as well as overall price? Having an elevator might be preferable. For superior local restaurants (like the restaurants Felice and Da Bucatino) and a much less touristy atmosphere, I’d like to stay in Testaccio again next time. There’s a Line B Metro, Piramide, which was maybe a 10 minute walk from our place. We didn’t use buses or trams, and took an occasional taxi, but mostly used the Metro or simply walked.

Trastevere was a great area on our previous trip, with convenient tram and bus connections to get to the main tourist center. Visiting there this last trip, I was surprised that it seemed to have attracted many more people on vacation - we unexpectedly ran into people who’d been on our Testaccio food tour a few days earlier, and talking with several Romans, it appears that Trastevere has gotten more touristy in the past 9 years. Still, I don’t believe a neighboring nightclub or disco is anything to be concerned about. We didn’t have any near either of our places on either trip.

You’ll eat better food in Trastevere than Piazza Navona and Campo di Fiori that cater to tourists. Locals go to Trastevere. Be prepared for not ordering off a menu and eating what the chef prepared that night.

For us, using Vrbo and Airbnb is a bit of a guess - you don't know the exact location of the lodging so you can't google map it to locate any noisy restaurants! But when we travel with friends, airbnbs are nice to have a kitchen....

We have stayed in an apartment off of Giubonarri by Campo di Fiore and loved the area. That street was very quiet. We have also stayed at Hotel Due Torri which is north of Piazza Navona on a tiny alley - no noise at all!

Both areas had the ease of walking to Trastavere - our favorite neighborhood for wandering.

Many posters love the Train station area. We just don't find it charming, especially if you don't plan to take the train consistently during your stay in Rome.

I use Airbnb and when I’m interested in knowing the exact location of a place I send a polite message and ask. So far each one has given me the address.

We (family of 5) stayed in a rental apartment in Trastevere and loved it. We didnt stay near the center of it, but a few streets away (in the direction of the Vatican in our case). Im not sure what you mean by nightclubs. It felt like a nice reprieve from the tourist crush whenever we retreated there from our outings (we walked everywhere from Trastevere, from the Colosseum to the Borghese to the Vatican)

hey hey ebrichter.nyc
we have used cross-pollinate.com they own the beehive hostel and hotel.
look at the apartments that are available and if something you like. you can alway contact them with an email.
tripadvisor.com/vacation rentals
we have used them for our paris and annecy trip in france. liked that we could send message first before booking.
booking.com
put in our filters and sent message to ask any questions.
have tried airbnb and vrbo, but didn't like the high fees they have.
when booking, remember times for check in, read fine print, most apartments have no luggage storage unless you ask or find something near the apt. we also like to find a place with a washer dryer if available and a balcony/terrace for morning coffee or happy hour wine.
good luck with your research

I recently stayed near the Piazza di Pasquino and thought it was fantasically located, but it's definitely got some touristy vibes and is close to where you stayed before. We sort of informally decided to stay in Prati next time ourselves--tons of fantastic shopping and close to the Vatican, but admittedly requires more effort to get to areas like the Colosseum.

You'd be well served to mark out the places you're hoping to visit on a map and figuring out the best area to stay from there.

Last trip we stayed in Rome at the beginning and again at the end. Our arrival hotel was in Trastevere near Piazza San Calisto and our exit hotel was in Monti. We loved Trastevere with its energy (never saw nightclubs) and ease of either trams or feet for transportation. Monti was great but the twisty neighborhood was a little more difficult to traverse in the dark (we’re late 60s & mid-70s). In neither spot were we ever bothered by noise (we went in May).

Halfway between Trastevere and Piazza Navona -- both geographically and culturally -- we really enjoyed staying in the little area south of the Vatican around Via delle Fornaci. We stayed in a convent about 500 m from St Peter's Basilica called Casa per Ferie Santa Maria alla Fornaci. The area is convenient to the Vatican, a regional train station (Roma San Pietro), bus 64 (from Vatican to Roma Termini, passing all the tourist spots including Piazza Navona). There are a few restaurants on Via delle Fornaci.

Thank you everyone. Decisions are being made. As are all decisions made by committee - never quite what I imagined but, hey, I'll be back in Rome!
Wishes for a safe and happy and healthy holiday to each of you.
