Needing Help with Italy in November

My husband and I are traveling to Italy in November and we're looking for a couple of other places to visit while we're there. One in the Tuscany region and one preferably between Bologna and Rome (considering San Marino, but we're not sure if it's worth it). He's not really interested in Venice because he's afraid it's become too touristy. Any help on those ? days is appreciated! We just don't want to spend the whole day on the train.

  • Day 1 - Rome
  • Day 2 - Rome
  • Day 3 - Rome to Florence
  • Day 4 - Florence
  • Day 5 - Florence to ?
  • Day 6 - ? to Bologna
  • Day 7 - Bologna
  • Day 8 - Bologna to ?
  • Day 9 - ? to Rome

Venice is touristy because there is no other place like it. Are you saying that Rome and Florence are not touristy? I would think the crowds would be better in November.

You are hitting places pretty quickly, with only 9 days I would not add another stop. I would also skip Bologna and either add Venice or spend more time between Rome and Florence with day trips to some other places like Orvieto or Sienna.

I agree that Venice is touristy for a reason. Between Bologna and Venice, the logical stops are Ferrara or Padova (right on the direct train line), which are not touristy at all but are very worthwhile.

I also agree that in 9 days, you don't need to add stops, but time in each stop. Remember that the day of arrival from the US is often a jet-lagged haze, so with only two full days in Rome, you may not have much quality time to appreciate it before you head out.

Well, probably tight to do another location. But, that's OK if that's what you want and it depends totally on what you want to see and your expectations. Having said that here are my thoughts:

Venice is totally unique and should be visited. I can't go to Italy without going back to Venice. It is one of my favorite cities in the world, hands down. In November there will be a lot fewer people and lot colder weather. You might think about being south in November.

San Marino. I found San Marino to be really cool. It is a mountain top basically and with beautiful castles and towers. If you go out there go by San Leo also. However, San Marino is NOT between Rome and Bologna, it is east of Bologna and out of the way. A car is the way to get there.

How about Rome/Naples/Florence/Rome? The train travel will eat time but it might be worth going south.

A day trip to Lucca from Florence by train is easy to do. An hour each way and very cool city. Orvieto might be a better place to overnight than Bologna to maximize your time.
