Needing help for laid-back days outside Rome

My husband and i are spending a week in Rome (not our first time) and wanting a casual, laid-back time seeing a few of the less touristy things. We then would like to train somewhere not too far away and spend a leisurely week just enjoying Italy. We plan to fly out of Fiumicino, but nothing is set. We would love any suggestions.

Have you been anywhere else in Italy? Could you share the season? It makes a difference, for example in summer or early fall, something like taking the ferry to Ponza might be fun. Is that too small? Please share if you were thinking of village or city, etc.
Define "not too far away" in # hours on train.
One easy option would be to take train to Florence and pick any Tuscan town that appeals. Lucca has many fans (it would kinda drive me crazy, but nearby Pistoia has been calling me). I'd have Siena on my list. Orvieto also gets many favorable remarks here. I've had my eye on Viterbo, which is on the train line, but I wonder if you would run out of things to do/day trips in a week--depends on you!

San Casiano Dei Baggni

Train from to Chiusi, bus to San Casiano dei Baggni

Have friends who own and BnB there.

I’ve throughly loved my stays there but rented a car in Chiusi. Its be over a decade though so no up to date intel.

My sister and her husband spent a week in Orvieto this past fall (without a car)
I wondered if there was enough to do but they definitely enjoyed themselves.

You’ll still need to be in Rome night before your flight so you could certainly venture even further away.

Lago di Bracciano could be beautiful depending on time of year

Much depends on the month, I am a big fan of Orvieto about an hour north of Rome by train. If April or early May then Sorrento about 3 hours south of Rome. J

Thanks so much to each of you. I was trying to be brief, but I was too general. We’ll be in Rome the last two weeks of this month (February). We have been quite a few places in Italy -Orvieto, Siena, the M towns, Tuscany, Umbria, etc. We’re now thinking of renting a car (suggestions for this?), and going South to Castle Gondalfo, Nimi, etc. . And, yes, we still have to get a room near Fumincino - again, suggestions?

You all are amazing! Thanks, Shay

This crowd thrives on specifics, lol. I've always wanted to dig into Lazio--I love white wine, so Frascati has been on my radar.
Sounds divine. Everyone who uses Autoeurope seems pleased with their service.
sounds wonderful, enjoy!
