Needed Cinque Terre info

Going to CT in Sept. I read this info that I copied & pasted below. It’s so concerning and wondered how much is true. I only posted 3 concerns although there were 18, but the 1st one concerns me most. Anyone been there last year to confirm this info. Do you need to book a time now to walk the trails as this article is saying?

Copied….
I live in Italy. I have watched every single one of these happen. Some of them will ruin your day. ? Some of them will cost you money. All of them are avoidable.

1) ARRIVING WITHOUT CHECKING THE TRAIL STATUS

The famous blue trail connecting all five villages is not fully open. Multiple sections are closed in 2026 — the Corniglia–Manarola section has been shut for years with no reopening date. The Monterosso–Vernazza section is also currently closed.

People arrive every day expecting to walk all five villages in sequence. They cannot.

Check parconazionale5terre.it before you go. Trail status updates in real time. Do not plan your entire trip around a route that may not exist.

2) BUYING THE WRONG CARD — OR BUYING IT AT THE STATION

Two cards exist: the Trekking Card (trail access only) and the Train Card (trails plus unlimited train travel between Levanto and La Spezia).

In peak season a single train ticket between any two villages costs up to €10. If you are taking the train three or more times in a day, the Train Card saves money. Do the calculation before you buy.

More importantly: buy online before you arrive. The queues at the station info points in summer are slow and the card sells out on peak days.

The card is required only between March 14 and November 2. Outside those dates, all trails are free.

3) NOT ASKING YOUR HOST ABOUT THE VIA DELL'AMORE RESIDENT CARD

If you are staying overnight in Riomaggiore or Manarola, contact your host before you arrive and ask for the resident tourist card.

This QR code allows you to walk Via dell'Amore in both directions instead of the mandatory one-way flow. It lets you bypass the pre-booked time slots. It gives a €4 discount. It is not mentioned on the official website. Most guests never know it exists.

Ask before you book your access slot. Once you have booked without it, it is too late.

Looks pretty reasonable, not anything to be concerned about. Trail status should be checked because they can be closed for maintenance. The paved trail requires a reservation. The card is required, and you need to know which one you need.

  1. Yes, it makes sense no matter where you are hiking to first check that the trails you want are open. The appropriate website was provided.

  2. You will need a card in order to hike the Blue Path trails (that are open).. To get to either of the villages to hike the via dell amore, you need to take a train. So getting the Train Card makes sense. The only trail that requires a pre booked time is the Via dell Amore. If travelling in high season, these times can sell out . Book when you have firmed up your dates.

3 Cant comment on this section, since I haven't stayed in either village.

Linda, the trails are fragile and any sort of wet/stormy weather, damage or overuse can close them at any time. It's a risk one takes if hiking is on your agenda. While some of the overused "Blue trail" segments may be closed for one reason of another, other trails may be open. Yes, the Corniglia–Manarola section of the "Blue" has been closed for years due to landslide. There is a work-around but it's longer and more strenuous.

There are many other trails in addition to the "Blue" route; see the park's website. This page shows which paths are open or closed at any given point. Clicking on any of the lines provides info on that trail section, such as difficulty. Trail info can change at any time.

The only trails which require a CT trekking (or Treno/trekking) card are the segments of the Blue Trail. The Via Dell'Amore section requires a timed-entry reservation. I'm unfamiliar with a resident card but you can ask at your accommodation.

This is another website with some useful info:

Regarding #3, last May we stayed in Manarola, and we did get the resident tourist card (a QR code) that allowed us to walk on the Via Dell'Amore in either direction, whenever you want. You can bypass the pre-booked time slots. Contact your hotel about this if you are staying in either village. I am sure this is mentioned on the website. That is how I knew about it before we arrived.

Regarding #2, if you are hiking and also want to use the trains, purchase the Cinque Terre Treno Card online.
