Read on TripAdvisor that Hotel Olivedo in Varenna is not as great as advertised. Any comments? Any other hotels for under 135 E. Thanks.
My parents and I thoroughly enjoyed the Hotel Olivedo in Varenna. Actually, I don't think I've ever enjoyed a hotel more. The food and the views are tremendous. However, we have the "Minnesota nice" background and don't argue about anything. Laura, the owner of the Hotel Olivedo is definitely in charge. If you're an assertive hotel guest, you will be miserable.
Lea, 5 years ago this week we stayed at the small RS-recommended Albergo Beretta located between the train station and waterfront, and I liked it fine. It is not only under 135 Euro, but RS's 2007 Italy book lists it at 68 Euro. Again it is very small, with a handful of rooms above a local bar. The room, however, was spacious, and had a balcony overlooking the waterfront.
Lea my husband & I stayed at Eremo Gaudio in 2005 recommended by RS. I can't remember what we paid but it was under 135 euro. The view was to die for. High up on hill our room had a small balcony overlooking the lake. It is a trek to get to but if I ever return that's where we will be staying.
