Hello: My husband and I are currently planning a trip to Sicily for the first two weeks of April starting in Palermo and ending in Catania. We've opted to not rent a car and use public transport with a few guided group trips for less accessible outings. After a few days in Palermo and day trips from there, we're thinking of traveling from Cefalu to Taormina by train on Sunday, April 6 to then do some day trips from there but haven't been able to find good information to help us assess if this is a good option. Is that train route on a Sunday reasonable? Is it scenic? Thanks in advance for any sage advice!
I can't respond to the point about Sunday trains specifically, but we did a similar trip, taking the train from Palermo to Giardini Naxos (for Taormina), stopping off along the way at Milazzo for the ferry to the Aeolian Islands, and it was very simple and straightforward. You do get nice views along the coast! From Taormina it's very easy to get a bus directly to Catania. We also did a half-day organised small group tour from Taormina to Etna with Etna People which I really recommend. Good luck with the planning!
Thank you for your response!
