Need to choose hotel in Sorrento

Hello! I am traveling with my family of five- (ages- 23, 21 and 18) to Sorrento for three nights in June. Choosing between Hotel La Favorita, Grand Hotel Ambascatori and Hotel Mediterraneo. We would like a really nice pool area, good breakfast and the ability to get to the historic center easily. Thank you in advance!

Hotel Mediterraneo's address is actually Sant'Agnello, and would be a bit further away from the amenities in central Sorrento than I'd personally care to be, especially if planning on traveling back and forth on foot. It's not a huge minus, though, and more personal preference based on our own travel style. I do see that the hotel offers shuttle service.

With just two full days to work with, I wouldn't put a lot of weight behind hotel choice based on the pool? There's a lot to see and do in the region, and very easy to be out-and-about ALL day. Then again, if choosing Sorrento mostly just to hang out... Also, check the hours on the Hotel Mediterraneo's pool? I'm seeing mention that it closes at 7:00 PM but that may have changed. Still, if evening dips are important, it may be a detail you'll want to check with all of your potential choices in case they have early-ish 'quiet hours'.

Hotel La Favorita is in a great location. It is near Villa Communale park where you can take an elevator down to the Marina where you get the boat to Capri. It is also only a few blocks walk to the Centro Storico area by Via Reginald Giuliani where there are charming shops and cafes. The sunset by Piazza Della Vittoria right near Hotel La Favorita has spectacular sunsets over the Bay of Naples. We stayed in a hotel nearby and loved this area of Sorrento.

5 of the big cliffside hotels have the same parent company, I think. We stayed at the Ambasciatori in 2014 and were very happy. Rick called it "a worthwhile splurge." Sorrento books up six months ahead, so many of our smaller choices were sold out, but we liked the Ambasciatori. Besides the nice pool deck, these cliff hotels have fixed (not floating), private wooden swimming platforms in the Gulf of Naples, reached by the hotel's elevator. Ours had a bar, too. Would stay there again.

I don't think the massive buffet breakfast at the Ambasciatori was free, but their business model (in 2014) involved "rebates" that were only spendable at the hotel, so you could say it was ... sort of "free"?? We paid extra for a Gulf-front room with a massive balcony, but you can pay for a smaller balcony if you like. Small problem with seagulls and ferry horns, but soundproof windows. Our bed faced Vesuvius and had a motorized window blind operated from beside the bed. Fireworks one night!

In fairness, the Ambasciatori is not the closest cliff hotel to downtown, but we walked every night for dinner, and enjoyed the views and Passeggiata aspect of the walk. No need for a taxi without luggage. I thought the taxi with luggage from the Circumvesuviana was overpriced, but what can you do? Because we disliked the Circumvesuviana, we paid 100 Euros for a car back to the Naples train station, put on our hotel bill. We also hired a car and driver (not a certified guide ... ) for 8 hours on the Amalfi Coast the same way, from the Ambasciatori's land-services partner. Charged to our room.

It seemed like a quiet edge of town, although there was a nearby underground parking garage where cars lined up every night like for the Thanksgiving Day parade in NYC. Sheesh!

We are traveling to Sorrento in July ( I know too hot, but I'm a teacher so that's that), and we will be staying at the Hotel Antiche Mura. This is our first trip to Italy, so I cannot make any recommendations. However, the hotel gets rave reviews, it is centrally located, does have a pool, and is a Rick Steves recommendation. We are a family of 6 so the price was reasonable enough.

Check out Hotel Bristol. Fabulous large room. Huge balcony/terrace overlooking Sorrento and the Bay of Naples with Mt Vesuvius in the background. Nice rooftop pool. Easy walk into town. Depending in how tired we were, occasionally took a taxi back at night. We had our dinner there our first night after a long travel day, and it was one of the best meals we had. Very attentive staff. I wish we were going back so we could stay there again!

...we will be staying at the Hotel Antiche Mura.

We've stayed at that one and enjoyed it very much. While it doesn't have views of the sea, the pool garden/bar is very pleasant to lounge around at after a long, hot day of sightseeing, and the desk staff were wonderful. Besides, we had plenty of those sea views to soak up during our daytime adventures! Great breakfast (included in the tariff) in a sunny breakfast room; easy walk from the Circumvesuviana station; close to Piazza Tasso yet no issues with noise.
