Need to buy tickets for Pompeii in advance?

We will be in Amalfi area mid October and would like to take a day to do Pompeii and Herculaneum. I'm all for buying tickets in advance if that means no lineups, etc., but wouldn't want to go on a rainy day. Don't think that would be too enjoyable.

Has anyone gone to Pompeii without purchasing tickets in advance, and if so, were the lineups horrendous?

Many thanks for any information.

Been there 3 times, twice with grandsons, and there has never been a line to enter. Sadly, the last time in November with our grandson, couldn't find a guide.

If you go in the morning before the tourist buses get there it is easy to buy a ticket (with cash) and go right in. Go to this site and print off the site maps and history documents and take them with you. Rick also has a simplified map that accompanies his audio tour (which I recommend). If you ask they will give you a map but I didn't find it helpful. If you are really into history I suggest you buy and book and bring it with you. There are hardly any directions or explanations at the site.

We didn't pre-purchase and didn't have any problem with long lines. That trip was also in October, and we arrived first thing in the morning when the gates opened.

Many thanks to all for your suggestions. We will obtain maps and guides ahead of time and choose a nice day.

Kanga, they also have a bookshop near the entrance, and we spent a few minutes choosing an in-depth printed guidebook with maps. I've referenced it many times since so it's been a great souvenir of that day.

Another great online reference is:

Tons of info on the history and structures, and downloadable maps.
