Need to book Rome hotel in advance for Jan. 1?

My husband and I will be in Rome twice during an upcoming trip to Italy: 2 nights on Dec. 26 and 27, and then again for 1 night on Jan. 1 before heading back to the States.

We have booked our hotel for the first visit, but are considering waiting to book the hotel for our second visit until after we arrive in Rome. That way we can decide "on the ground" whether we want to return to our first neighborhood (trestavere) or stay closer to the train station.

Is Thursday, Jan. 1, likely to be a busy night in Rome? Do you think we will have a hard time reserving a room we'll like with just a few days notice? (We're staying at the Hotel Santa Maria for our first visit, and will be looking for something in a similar price range for the second.)

Thank you for any advice!

I think the best way to answer that is to make enquiries directly with the Hotels (or with discount Hotel web sites like Hotels.com, expedia, Venere)...if there are lots of rooms still available, then I think you will be safe in delaying until you get there...if not, you should think about booking before you leave.

Two years ago I helped our daughter and son-un-law make reservations in Rome for Christmas and New Years and had a difficult time finding rooms 2 months before their trip. (Although unlike my husband and me, they wanted fancier hotels--3- or 4-star!)
I would reserve now so that I wouldn't end up having to pay more than budgeted for. Good luck!

If you know you need the date of January 1 make a reservation. The only time you should not book in advance is if your itinerary is unknown.
