three of us ladies want to travel to the village of our father. Leaving LAX, not sure what is the most direct way to get there: lax to Rome; lax to Naples; lax to Bari? Then how to get to Anzano from each of those possible cities. All suggestions welcomed.
LAX to Rome and then the train southbound.
I can't help with the specifics to the village. However, I visited San Giovanni Rotondo, which is in the area. I went from Rome, and it was a pleasant, pretty train ride. I seem to remember it taking 3 or 4 hours. I suggest you contact the tourist information office in the nearest sizable town for specifics. Most have e-mail. I send my question in Italian, using Google Translate, and typically get useful responses. And I find DeutscheBahn to be the most useful website for train information; I'd suggest entering possible destination cities and seeing what trains are available. You can't buy the tickets via DeutscheBahn or get the prices, but I find it the easiest for seeing what trains are available and their routing. You can then go to another website (eg, Trenitalia) to buy the tickets.
It doesn't look like the train gets anywhere particularly close. So my guess is that you will probably need to rent a car to be most convenient. Naples appears to be the closest airport, but I don't know how big of a pain it is to get a car there and get out of the area. Anzano di Puglia seems to be just off the A16.
Marie, As the previous reply mentioned, Naples is the closest airport but flight options and costs to Rome may be more favourable. Anzano di Puglia doesn't appear to be on a rail line, but it's likely there is Bus service from Naples. I haven't been able to find information on Buses, but if I find anything I'll post another note. Buon Viaggio!
