We will be staying in Lucca for 4 days as part of a 12 day Italy tour on our own using public transportation. Now we are looking for another town for 4 days to use as a base for sightseeing. Towns that come to mind are Orvieto and Chiusi. Both of these seem to have good rail service. Is one town better than the other for day trips. We are up for day tours, private car if needed, or we would rent a car if something is really appealing. We like ancient history so Chiusi is on the top of my list since there is a lot to see. Are all the sights within the town and accessible? Are there other towns we should consider? (Either first or last leg will be Rome.)
