Hi! My husband and I are traveling with 2 other couples in July (all in our 50-60s) and reserved 3 nights inside the walls of Siena at Hotel Palazzo Ravizza as a base to explore Tuscany. Prior to arriving we will have spent 3 nights in Venice and one night in Florence. The couples have decided to split apart for 2 additional nights in Tuscany (or?) before meeting up in Rome for 4 nights. Does anyone have a suggestion for a town that my husband and I should consider for our two night romantic get away? We are planning to rent a car.

Do you have to rent a car? Since you are going to Rome, I would take the train and stop at Orvieto for the 2 nights. It can be very romantic :)

Orvieto is indeed very nice but look also at the cute little town of Montalcino in Tuscany. This is the home of Brunello wine and has some terrific restaurants. It does not tend to be overrun by tourists. You can visit the abbey of Sant'Antimo nearby (very beautiful) and maybe visit some wineries. Call ahead for winery visits. Beautiful drive, also, from Montalcino to Pienza and Montepulciano.

Thank you for these great ideas. Our friends are now proposing that the two nights separate can start once we hit Florence, before we arrive Siena. Either way we decide, Orvieto and Montelcino sound lovely!
