I will be in Venice area mid September. I'd like to spend 2 nights (3 days) near mountains but will only have train or bus transportation available. any suggestions?? Thank you.
There is always good old Cortina d'Ampezzo. You can get trains as far as Calalzo-Pieve di Cadore then a bus to Cortina. Very stylish resort town with stunning mountain scenery all around. Lots of hotels. Don't miss the passeggiata.
We took trains from Venice to Trento. Then a bus to Moena. Beautiful area and lovely village. We stayed at Hotel Monza and would recommend it for the nice views and balconies and friendly hosts. We had their half-board which is breakfast and dinner (traditional area food).
I'd take the train from Venice to Bolzano and then a bus to Santa Cristina or Ortisei in Val Gardena. Then stay at Garni Ariston in Santa Cristina (we did in 2015 and it was great!) or Garni Walter in Ortisei (our second choice). Free buses run through Val Gardena and there are lifts into the mountains on both sides of the valley. Needless to say, Alpe di Siusi is beyond amazing!
Thank you all for such great suggestions. Now it's decision time.
