Hello! We will take the train in from the airport on September 26, have an afternoon and an evening and need a place to stay within fairly easy access to the train station and the Colosseum, which we plan to take a tour of. We need a nice place for dinner too! Same on our way out on October 2, we will arrive back into the Termini early afternoon. Need a place to stay and another a place for dinner. We will train back to the airport for our late afternoon flight on October 3. If anyone has any suggestions for these quick stays, we would appreciate it. Hotel price range from 200 to 300 Ish is good. We like nice food and would like everything fairly close to where we need to be! We know!… We need more time but we've been to Rome twice before and we don't have more time this time!
I'm sure we'll be fine on the train since we are very cautious, however… just wondering, maybe we should take a private car each way? We have been hearing horror stories about thieves on the train!

For your first day in Rome, I like Mecenate Palace Hotel. It’s just a few blocks from Roma Termini & located across the street from Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore.
For your final day in Rome, I would go beyond Roma Termini but still very handy for your needs. Hotel City - Palazzo Dei Cardinali is very close to the Barberini metro stop. I’ve stayed there multiple times when I don’t have to be at Roma Termini before 6am. I like the location, and it’s easy to walk over the the Trevi fountain and other tourists spots without being in the crowded Pantheon area trying to get a taxi in the morning on time to the train station. The metro will take you the couple of stops right into Roma Termini.
Are you worried about the Rome airport-to-Roma Termini train? That’s just the direct Leonardo Express, and you can place your suitcase above your seat. Or sit across the spot for larger bags.

There are lots of hotels in the vicinity of Roma Termini, and the RS Italy guidebook has listings for some of them. I've stayed at the Hotel Sonya and Hotel Aberdeen in the past and both were very comfortable.
I've never had a problem with thieves on the Leonardo Express but it's a good idea to watch luggage if it's not right next to you. Carry on size luggage can be stored in the rack above your seats and there should be a luggage rack in the coach for larger items.
If you're buying paper tickets from a Kiosk, be sure to validate the tickets prior to boarding the train as failure to do that could result in hefty fines collected on the spot!
