Could someone recommend a 2 day itinerary departing CT with arrival in Rome the evening of day 2? Will already have been to Rome, Florence, and Tuscany area prior to CT. Thank you.

I like the idea of stopping in Orvieto for the night, but I would take an earlier train out of CT. Most rooms will want you to check out around 10:00 AM anyway, so you could take a 9:23 departure or a 10:06 departure, from La Spezia, arrive in Orvieto either 14:08 or 15:24, and still have time to sight see and have a nice dinner. Spend your night, sight see the next day until you have to depart for Rome, which will take approx. 1 1/2 hrs.
The suggestion to spend two days / one night in Orvieto is a good one to consider, but I also feel that it would be better to travel there earlier in the day. I'd suggest timing your trip so you can arrive there in about mid-afternoon as that will allow about 1.5 days overall. Arriving earlier will allow time for a bit of a walk-about and then a nice dinner.
Great suggestion, loved Orvieto!
I found the connection listed above was best if you wanted to minimise your number of connecting trains.
There are of course earlier options, most of which involving a further connection at Pisa.
I also liked the idea of enjoying a lazy morning before departing your CT hotel, and then arriving at your destination at a perfect time for dinner.
Thank you all for your most helpful suggestions. Orvieto, as described in the RS travel book, sounds as though it would be a nice, relaxing stop at the end of a rather fast paced trip. Your posts support this information.
