We have 10 days between Bologna and Rome and are looking for ideas for 1-2 places to go. Ideally we’d like places that won’t be too chilly or railny. We plan to stay in an apartment and enjoy interesting mid size cities. We tend to take it slow. Any suggestions?
San Marino/Rimini or really anywhere down the coast to Pescara. From there it's only a 2-2/12 hr ride to Roma. Not really out of the way, mild climate in that season. You can choose the mountains or the seaside.
Here are two ideas:
Stroll through the University of Bologna. It's the world's oldest university, topping Oxford, Paris and Salamanca. And Bologna is quite beautiful, worthy of a stroll. Here's a piece on idea: https://www.italymagazine.com/featured-story/stroll-around-university-bologna
See the Uffizi and Academia galleries in Florence. It's only 80-90 miles south of Bologna. The Uffizi is packed with great Renaissance art, and the Academia houses Michelangelo's David and other great sculpture. Also see the stunning Cathedral of Florence with its candy cane exterior. The food and wine in Florence can't be beat.
Personally, I wouldn’t choose a resort town such as Rimini off-season since many restaurants would be closed. My choices would be Lucca, Florence, Orvieto and possibly Assisi. Remember that November 1st is a holiday so that might add to crowds. Florence was mobbed with Italian tourists taking a long weekend when I was there last year. The weather was temperate and had no rain from Halloween thru the 15th. But no guarantees on that, of course.
Thanks for the suggestions. We are spending a week in Bologna before we leave. Wondering about maybe a few days in Pesaro then down to to Pescara. We may just travel by train and looks quite do able.
