Need ideas for Italy in July

We are planning a 10 day trip to Italy in late July. We know it will be hot and crowded, but this is the only time we can go. Does anyone have suggestions for places that are special, but shouldn't be too crowded? Thanks!

Becky, what would make a place special to you?

The further south you travel, the hotter it will be. I would look into the north, specifically Milan, Lake Como or Lake Garda and the Dolomites with a couple of nights in Venice.

As much as I love Florence, because it basically sits in a geographical bowl, that time of year it gets hot early & stays hot. And the Como/Bellagio area will no doubt be overrun.

As Stephen says above, the north would be preferable from a temperature standpoint. Why not stay in and around the Alps, from Lake Bled in Slovenia to the east, Innsbruck/Hall (Austria) in Tirol to the north, then Verona to the south, with a daytrip to Venice, which we know will be crowded. You could knock around that triangle by train for 10 days and have a great time.

I ran to the Dolomites last summer due to the heat. The temperature wasn't really any better in Bolzano and Bressanone, but it was very pleasant up in the mountains. There were quite a lot of hikers and walkers around, especially at Alpe di Siusi and Ortisei, but it didn't affect my enjoyment of the beautiful scenery
