Need help with trip..

I need help with our trip. Taking honeymoon to Italy 5/22/17-6/2/17. We will be taking the train between destinations. Flying into Rome staying two nights, then to Amalfi Coast for 2 nights, then to Cinque Terre for 2 nights, then to Lake Como area for 2 nights, then Venice staying 3 nights then home to U.S. We like the coastal regions but I'm wondering if we are trying to put too much into a 12 day trip. Can anyone give some recommendations.......Please!!

If it was me on a honeymoon, I wouldn't want to jump around like that every 2-3 days - your areas of interest are not exactly geographically close (especially Amalfi Coast which is a real outlier). Two nights in each location will seem really "thin", especially for a place like Rome where you'll also lose time due to jet lag. Why not focus on one region like Tuscany, Umbria, or Veneto, for example, so you can see a few large cities for at least 3-4 full days and do short side trips? I guess another way of saying that is "I would set my radius of travel a little tighter" and not try to go from extreme north to south to west to east. I've done a trip like yours except it was for south of Rome (including Naples, Amalfi Coast, Capri, Pompeii) and it was quite aggressive and tiring, but since I was traveling solo and wanted to see as much as possible, that was fine with me (but I can't imagine putting someone else through that pace). I wouldn't think that kind of travel would fit well with a honeymoon unless you're a really energetic couple and relaxing is not a priority.

As several people will tell you - "You can always come back". I agree with the other poster that you are trying to see too much in a short time. We are going again next year and this will be our 6th time to Italy. We usually spend a month in Europe each time we go and do at least 2 weeks in Italy. Each time we have picked an area that intrigues us most. First of all I would leave the Amalfi coast out this time and do the Cinque Terre area for 3 days, then up to Lake Como area for 3 days, then train to Verona which is a lovely town for 2 days and then on to Venice for 3 days. I assume the 12 days includes a day over and a day back which leaves you only 10 days to sight see. Fly into Milan and take the train to Cinque Terre (Vernazza was our destination) - any of the towns are great so decide with reading RS book on where you would stay there) then look up the train schedules for going to L Como etc. you will be surprised that at least 1/2 day will be spent travelling to these towns, so again time away from sightseeing. It takes
some time to plan and I make reservations at least 6-8 months in advance. You are going at a good time as your assured of great weather in Italy and crowds are not at its peak but there are still crowds.
Hope this helps and congratulations.

I too think u sre squeezing alot into 12 days. As a freq traveler to italy, i would suggest concentrating on no more than 2 areas. One arrival in Rome 4 days and remainder in Amalfi coast area which could be the best honeymoon destination imo. U could base yourself in dreamy Sorrento and take your daytrips out to Capri, down the amalfi coast by boat and return via bus, Scenic Ravello, Pompeii if u like Roman ruins etc. it is one of my fav destinations and your timing for it will be great. Right bef summer peak tourist season.
Congrats and happy traveling.

Congrats on the nuptials! Is this a first trip? What are your interests in each place - that helps determine how much time is needed.

I think you are trying to cram too much in. Do you actually want to see any of Rome? It really needs at least 2 full days (3 nights) just to hit the high points. I would cut the AC and add those nights to Rome. That would give you plenty of time there then 2 nights each in CT & LC then a little slow down in Venice before returning home.

Been to all 5 places but never on 1 trip and definitely not on one 11 night trip.
You will not be happy with your trip, rushing around to get from place to place, checking in and out.
My advise: Drop Lake Como and Cinque Terre, keep Rome, Amalfi and Venice
Rome 4 nights, Amalfi Coast (would stay in Positano for a honeymoon) 4 nights, Venice 3 nights would be a perfect Honeymoon trip!
Might even make Amalfi Coast 5 if you want a day trip to Pompeii and one to Capri ; drop 1 night from Rome in this case.

No reason to go to both Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre in the same trip, why waste all that time and effort to travel from one coastal location to another.
Both are great, but Amalfi Coast more impressive to me.

Any Lake cannot impress me the way the sea can so for me Lake Como is an easy drop.

cd,

First of all, congratulations!

Regarding your proposed Itinerary, I have to agree with the others that you're trying to do too much with insufficient time. A significant portion of your limited time will be spent seeing Italy through the windows of a train or Bus. My suggestion (especially for a honeymoon) would be "quality" rather than "quantity".

Is this your first trip to Europe? Also, where are you travelling from? Does the 12 days include your two travel days (you'll arrive in Europe the day after you leave home)?

One possibility you could consider is something like this......

  • Fly inbound Venice (3 nights)
  • Train to Varenna, Lake Como (2 nights)
  • Train to Cinque Terre (3 nights) - you'll have to decide which of the five towns you want to stay in.
  • Train to Rome (4 nights) - outbound flight from FCO

Keep in mind that it will take at least half a day for travel each time you change locations. I'd skip the Amalfi Coast this time, and return when you can spend more time there. As someone else mentioned, it's a bit of an "outlier" and transportation there is not as good as other parts of Italy so getting around will take longer (depending on where you plan on visiting on the Amalfi Coast).

Good luck with your planning!

Assuming that you are:
Departing USA on 5/22 arriving Italy 5/23 mid morning with jet lag

Stay in Rome the nights of Nights of 23rd, 24th 25th, 26th

Train to Cinque Terre on the morning of the 27th arriving mid day
Stay the nights of 27th, 28th, & 29th

Train to Venice on the morning of the 30th arriving LATE afternoon
Staying the night of the 30th, 31st & 1st

flying home on the morning of 5/2

With these assumptions you really only have 10 Days in Italy. Many of us might think that you would be better only going to two places. Nahhh ...your young and the long train rides are an event unto themselves. However going South out of Rome would just take too much travel time IMO. So NO to the 4 stops.....3 stops okay...

Before committing to ending your trip in Venice and flying back from there, check the airline schedules. Several people have reported that Venice departures are often extremely early in the morning, leading to very expensive transportation to the airport at ungodly hours. Since Venice has no streets, getting to and from the airport is more challenging than in most cities. Be sure you know what you're letting yourself in for.

one more option is to fly into Naples and spend 2 nights in the historic center. Great area and food. Then private car ( it is your honeymoon ) to Sorrento or positano for 5 nights . Sorrento is much bigger with more restaurants and shops. It's also easy to get to Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi coast from Sorrento. Then car to Naples and train to Rome. The remaining nights in Rome.

Per acraven's comments.
I just flew out of Venice in the early morning less than 2 weeks ago.

As long as you understand you will need to pay 120 Euro or roughly that amount for a private water taxi it is not an issue at all and much more enjoyable than a taxi ride probably anywhere else in the world.
Your hotel can arrange a nearby pickup for any time of the morning no matter how early, the longest walk you will have will be from the water taxi dock to the terminal which takes about 10 minutes.
The Venice airport is small and wait/security times there early in the morning will likely be short, so in many ways it is easier to fly out of than Rome.

Take out Cinque Terre and Lago di Como, add those nights to Roma and the Amalfi Coast. Sorrento is not on the Amalfi Coast. But well-located for daytrips.

I would start in Venice. It's the best place to simply absorb the atmosphere while getting over jetlag. If you can fly out of Naples, go to Rome, then the Amalfi Coast. If not, then choose either Lake Como or the Cinque Terre (I'd lean toward Lake Como) and then end your trip in Rome.

Agree with Chani about starting in Venice as it is a really magical city that will be a great place to start a honeymoon. After all the stress associated with most weddings, you will probably need time to relax and decompress and I can't think of a better place than Venice. Trying to cover all you have listed will, in my opinion, just add more stress. One reason is that it almost always takes more time to go from one place to another than anticipated and that is time "lost" and you'll not get it back. This may very well be a case where less is more. If you fly into Venice, you can spend time there, head to Lake Como (which is also a very laid back place for rest and relaxation), then head to Cinque Terre. That will give you three to four days in each place and you'll not spend all your time traveling instead of relaxing.
