Need help with Transportation Options

I am planning our May/June trip to Italy and am stuck at the end of the trip. (Our entire trip is 2 weeks and we start in Venice, then Florence, then Rome and finally Sorrento.) It's a whirlwind trip that gives us a flavor of Italy... I'm sure we will be back again some day. The travelers are my husband, myself and our two young adult daughters.

We plan to arrive in Sorrento on June 3rd and depart for home from Rome on Saturday, June 6th. We have an early international flight (7:10 am). I'm trying to determine if we should travel to Rome on the 5th (preferably evening to enjoy as much time as we can in Sorrento) and stay near the Rome airport (for the early flight) or if we can stay in Sorrento on the night of the 5th and travel early in the morning (wee hours) to the Rome airport. We won't have a car. I was trying to look up train options from Sorrento on the Trenitalia site and I can't see any trains from Sorrento to Rome at all - so no idea if there are any early morning options.

I would only stay in Sorrento if we have a "sure thing" option to get to the Rome airport in time for the flight.

Another crazy option in my head is to forgo the hotel on the night of the 5th and sleep in the airport... but that's pretty crazy and my husband and daughter may object to that plan.

Can anyone offer suggestions for our last night in Italy?

Your are correct. There is no direct train to the airport or even Rome. For the train your would have to go through Naples. About a three hour trip plus maybe another hour to the airport. Spend the night in Rome and that a taxi to the airport in the am.

At 7.10 that is probably not an international flight back to the U.S. Too early. More likely to be a connecting flight to your flight home. That is easier because you can go direct to terminal 3 instead of terminal 5. But still need to be there around 5.30.

Thanks Frank. Our flight is actually through Istanbul. Any suggestions on an airport hotel?

You don't see a train from Sorrento to Rome because that train is not part of the Trenitalia system. The Circumvesuviana doesn't run all night, so you should plan to spend your last night in Rome or at an airport hotel.

Lynne,

To begin with as you have a very early departure, I'd highly recommend staying in Rome the night prior to your flight.

Regarding transportation to Sorrento, as a previous reply mentioned you'll be using the Circumvesuviana for that, as that's the only rail option between Naples and Sorrento. You can access that via the Garibaldi station, which is downstairs from Napoli Centrale. For the trip from Rome to Naples, you'll be using Trenitalia high speed trains. You could also use the competing Italo Treno, although they depart from Roma Tiburtina rather than Roma Termini.

The Circumvesuviana is a bit "colourful" and you'll need to watch your luggage carefully while riding on it. Aside from that, it will get you from Naples to Sorrento.

Definitely stay in Rome or near the airport on the night before departure. As stated above, Sorrento is MUCH too far away to make an early flight as the Circumvesuviana does not run 24/7: the last train leaves Sorrento at 21:37 PM, and it doesn't start running again until 6:01 AM.

As you'll be using this train to/from Sorrento, Naples and Pompei, if that's on your agenda, here's the schedule (click on "Linee Napoli -- Sorrento"):

Speaking from experience here! We flew out of Naples and had to book a private shuttle from Sorrento to make our early flight. Side note there: the Circumvesuviana is bare-bones, to be sure, but preferable to my weak stomach than that twisty-turny shuttle drive. I was positively green by the time we got to Naples!

We always come back to one last beautiful night in Rome. The Hotel Aberdeen that we have always stayed at has a car service that is well worth the price to get back to the airport on time. No matter what city I always ask our hotel what they can suggest for transportation. No stress before a very long trip back home.
