need help with train or bus from Orvieto to Perugia

I've got most of my 3 weeks of travel using public transportation in the Hill Top towns of Central Italy worked out. I'll be there in early May & can't decide if a bus makes more sense than a train to get to Perugia from Orvieto. (4 nights in old city center of Perugia).

If I take a train & do the transfers what is the name of the train station closest to the mini metro bus to get up to the top of old town?

Rick's books don't cover Perugia & most of the other travel guides talk about traveling from Rome, Assisi or Florence which I will not be doing. Any suggestions would be helpful. thank you

Flowerfun,

I’ve not visited Perugia (yet) but did a bit of research as I’d considered going there on my most recent trip. I did, however, take the train from Orvieto to Assisi and this is the same train that stops in Perugia.

You’ll need to book your train tickets; Orvieto to Perugia, the main train station (aka; Stazione Fontivegge).
Once you arrive to this station, you can take the Minimetrò up to the historic center.

Enjoy your trip!

I looked at Rome2Rio and they don't even list a train as an option. Odd. On the Trenitalia site they do have trains, though.
Both options seem to take about the same time, approx. 2 hours. Also cost about the same, within a couple of euros. It is whichever you prefer.

I will be in Perugia mid-May :)

Yes, my research came to the same conclusion. I was hoping to hear from someone who has been to Perugia. I thought I saw that the bus station was closer than the train station to the historic city center.

I will be traveling to Perugia from Orvieto on a Saturday and returning back to Orvieto on a Wednesday in May.

Flowerfun,

You can take bus E645 from Orvieto to Perugia, but as you can see on the schedule, there aren’t many time options in the morning, unless you want to depart Orvieto @ 5:50AM!

The train from Orvieto to Perugia involves an easy transfer at Terontola station which is a very small station.

BTW, Rome2Rio is a great website but not always up to date.

Hope this helps!

Enjoy your time in beautiful Umbria!
