Need help with our schedule; Rome to Sorrento to ???

This is what we have planned so far: 2 Days in Rome, 3 days in Sorrento, then we had planned to return to Rome for 2 more days, BUT we would love to see CT. We fly out of Rome, so I would like our last night to stay there. Any recommendations?

Sorrento to CT takes most one day each way, then most of another day CT to Rome. That leaves zero days in CT. Something has to give.

Any other suggestions on where to go for that day? We are open to all suggestions at this point!!

Orvieto could be a good day trip out of Rome. Stretching it a bit, the high-speed Eurostars can make it to Florence in 1hr. 40min. If you do Florence, I suggest that you make sure that to return to Rome in the very early evening to get some sleep and get to FCO on time.

I probably would not do CT and Sorrento on the same trip - too much time spent in transit! I would choose things to do and see in and around Rome (maybe Ostia? if you want to get out of Rome proper) and/or tack on another day in Sorrento or Naples or Salerno...add a day trip to Paestum maybe if you had not planned (?)...Pompeii....the museum in Naples...Capri...a day to go further along the coast to Positano, Amalfi, Cetara, Vietri sul Mare.

We had planned to see Pompeii, Capri & the Amalfi coast during our 3 day stay.

How far is Orvieto? Should we rent a car to get there?

Thank you for all your suggestions!

Hi Kathy,
You don't need to rent a car to get to Orvieto, the train stops there out of Rome. However, if you want to rent a car you'll have more freedom to drive around the countyside, which is always fun:) Make sure you stop in Positano while your on the Amalfi Coast! I was there last year and will be back in June for my honeymoon....Its just breathtaking! It should be a good substitute for CT.
Happy traveling!

With only 7 days, I do not think it would make ANY sense to add anything more than rome and amalfi coast. I would go directly from Rome to Sorrento for 4 days and return to Rome for 3.

Just depends on how much you want to see in those places. We spent 7 days in Rome and 5 days in Sorreno. You could do Capri and Amalfi the same long day and a day for Pompeii and just looking around Sorrento. Enjoy your trip; we loved Roma and our excursions around Sorrento.
