Need help with itinerary

My husband and I will be travelling around Italy for 3 weeks during July. I've come up with the following plan so far.

  1. Stay 5 nights at Rome (August Lucilla Palace Hotel) ;
    including two day trips to
~ Civita di Bagnoregio + Orvieto
    ~ Assisi + Perugia

  2. from Rome to Sorrento and stay at La Meridiana for 1
night, off to Capri the other day then back to Rome

    for the night

  3. from Rome to Florence, and stay there for 6 nights (La
Residenza del Proconsolo), including two day trips to
    ~ Lucca + Pisa
    ~ Arezzo

  4. stay 1 night at Siena (Antica Residenza Cicogna), then
off to San Gimignano the next day and back to Florence
    for the night

  5. from Florence to Bologna, stay at Starhotels Excelsior
    for a night

  6. from Bologna to Venice, stay for 3 nights, with a day
    trip to Verona

  7. from Venice to Milan, stay for 2 nights, with a day
    trip to Cinque Terre

Is it too ambitious? How about the hotel I plan to stay? Are they okay?

Dionne - only glaring thing is that between #4 & 5 it looks like you've got 3 1-night stays in a row. While I do make a few one nighters on my trips, especially when trying to get from one top destination to another, I do try not to have my 1-nighters together. Since I'm not a huge Florence fan myself, I'd break up the Tuscany towns (Florence, Siena, San Gimingnano, etc.) into 2 separate base cities, making day trips from there and then doing Bolonga as the one-night on your way to Venice.

And hopefully others will guide you as to the advisability of Cinque Terra as a day trip from Milan.

Re the day trip from Milan to Cinque Terre: This isn't a day trip we frequently see proposed on this forum, because of the travel time. It's about 9 hours of total travel time between Milano Centrale and Vernazza, which doesn't leave you with much time to do what you're going there to do. 9 hours total travel time is an estimate that includes station to station train time of about 3.5 to 4 hrs, plus an allowance for the time to get to the train station and wait for the train on both ends.Go here to see train schedules and times http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?ld=212.92&seqnr=3&ident=gi.0189392.1242754776&rt=1&rememberSortType=minDeparture&REQ0HafasScrollDir=1Times shown here only include station to station times.

Are you using train only or driving part of the way? Since Siena is between Rome and Florence, maybe switch #3 and #4 so you don't check in and out of Florence twice. Length of stay is pretty much personal taste. For instance, I'm a Pompeii fan but not interested in Capri. I find Trip Advisor the best source on checking out hotels. Amazing amount of info and quite fair.
