need help with Cinque-terra and area

My wife and I (ages 61 and 69) are going to Italy for the first time. We arrive in Savona on April 30 and need to be in Rome to catch a cruise that goes all around the borders of Italy on the 8th. We don't do stairs really well, love narrow gauge trains and want to spend time in the Cinque-terra during that 8 days between the boats. Then we have 2 days after the second cruise ship to go t Naples, etc. We have no clue what we are doing or how to get trains. It is becoming very confusing. Our dollars are pretty tight. The 13 days we will spend n the cruise around Italy has saved us a lot of money. It was $1099, in $$$. Help!! Thanks so much, bud

The port of Savona is a 1hr. train ride to Genoa. From Genoa, you have another 90 minutes to the Cinque Terre (Monterosso). Thus, it's a 2.5hr journey with 0-2 train changes depending on the run you choose. The port looks to be about a mile from the train station so you will most likely have to take a taxi or bus.

HERE'S A LINK to a typical train schedule.

Many areas of the CT can be steep although the main streets from the train station to the sea are gentle slopes. There are stairs from the train stations down to the towns (about 20-25). You will not avoid stairs in Italy. One suggestion is to go to Riomaggiore and hike the coast trail to Manarola. It's very flat with about 10 stairs. The walk will take about 30-35 minutes.
