Need help w July itinerary- Calabria in the mix

Hi guys, hopefully I can get gain some clarity with this upcoming trip if anyone has anything to recommend.

I’m going to Italy in July. It will be my 3rd time to Italy. One caveat is on July 17th is an art show I am a part of which takes place in Vibo Valentia in Calabria. This is why I am even going in July when it will be extremely hot!

However I have more to experience because I am contemplating moving to Italy in September which means I wanted to stay a bit in Florence again (considering school there).

So right now, I have : July 9th arrival in Roma, stay 9th-12th —> July 12th arrive in Salerno by train (I have never been here before ) stay 12th-16th —> July 16th arrive to Pizzo (20 min from Vibo Valentia ) and stay there until the 19th. Then…back up to Florence and leave on the 25th or so.

I wanted to do Florence lastly so that I can relax and focus and not worry about further travel. Does this itinerary make sense? One thing that throws me a bit is that I’m not as interested in Salerno, I stayed in Naples about a year ago, and I really loved it but I figured to try something new. Also I can’t imagine Naples in the heat as it is so condensed … in reality I really wanted to see Puglia, Lecce and some other spots but it seems too far out of the way. I had considered starting my trip in Sicily then going up instead which seemed to make more sense but I got anxious as I haven’t been to Sicily and traveling alone. Always wanted to see it though.

Am I doing too much or what can I change? Thank you!

I'm confused as to why you are spending so many nights in Salerno if you do not want to be there.

What about a town on the Cilento Coast, like Pisciotta? Or Marina di Camerota?

Maratea is a pretty hill town with a long stretch of coast below with many small hotels.
There is a train station in Maratea/Aquafredda.

I'm sure you could figure out a way to get to Matera which is one of the highlights of all of Italy.
Even a town like Amantea, with beach and upper town, would be lovely for a few nights....or Scalea, Diamante

And that stretch of coast near VV in Calabria has other interesting towns where I bet you'd find interesting things to do before and after the show.....Capo Vaticano for beaches.....

I guess we/I would need to know more to understand exactly what you are looking for.

When you were in Naples before, did you explore the Amalfi area? Salerno is often chosen as a base more than as a destination in its own right (though it is a pleasant city). I agree with eks, it depends on what you are after. I think those four days might be too brief to pop over to Puglia so I would stick to that coastline.

So I chose Salerno as a base to see some things I didn’t get to see when I was in Naples last.
Previously I visited Amalfi, Ravello and some small towns around Amalfi. But I didn’t see Pompeii. I thought from Salerno I could visit Naples w a day trip rather than staying directly in this time.

Thank you for your suggestions.

OP JD,
If you were to stay in say, Minori (or Atrani) instead of Salerno then that daytrip to Naples would become easier. We were in Pizzo exactly a year ago and enjoyed it and I hope that you will too. Regarding your Art Show: are you a painter or a sculptor or a photographer or...?
Btw, Capo Vaticano has a VG spa in addition to the beaches mentioned by Eks.

I know that you have not mentioned Tropea, but we have a killer villa recco for a property that we rented just on the outskirts. A vacation unto itself with a great pool for July. Just sayin.
I am done. The end.

Thanks for your response :)

I actually saw Minori and while it was beautiful I fear that I would grow restless there as it is very tiny (I guess hence “Minori”)..I am traveling alone and need easy access to the train and a bit of vibrancy or night life because when traveling alone I like to connect with the people I may meet along the way.

Good to know about Pizzo! I was a little unsure of how that would go. Yes, I am a painter!

I didn’t think of Tropea partly because I felt Pizzo may give me a bit of what I’m after with the coastline. Willing to look into your rec for where to stay though! I am open.

With plans to revisit Naples and visit Pompeii as day trips, I think Salerno will be perfect for those days. On your other day, you could visit another part of the Amalfi coast or head down to Paestum and see the marvelous temples.

Tropea is a great city with beautiful walks and sites. I suspect they have some nightlife. My experience in Pizzo is that is was very small and quiet.
