Need Help w/9-Day Amalfi Coast Itinerary!

Hi all—my husband and I have 9 days to spend on the Amalfi Coast in late September, and I’m hoping we can get some advice/suggestions on our itinerary.

Day 1 - Naples morning train to Sorrento

Day 2 - Sorrento, day trip to Naples & Pompeii

Day 3 - Sorrento ferry to Ischia

Day 4 - Ischia

Day 5 - Ischia ferry to Sorrento, bus to Amalfi

Day 6 - Amalfi, day trip to Ravello

Day 7 - Amalfi, day trip to Positano

Day 8 - Amalfi, day trip to Capri

Day 9 - Amalfi ferry to Salerno, train to Rome

I think everyone is going to say we’re trying to squeeze in too much, but we get bored easily and like to be on the move (we visited Venice, Florence, Siena, and Rome in 9 days last year). Given this, is it doable, or is there a better way we can structure it? Should we eliminate Ischia? I really want to see it, but don’t want to burn us out. Perhaps we should visit Ischia first by taking a ferry from Naples, then head to Sorrento?

The days in Amalfi are non-negotiable because we’re meeting friends there, but I’m not sure if taking a day trip to other places each day is too much?

Thanks in advance!

Sorrento, day trip to Naples & Pompeii

This seems logistically too much.

Your daytrips from Amalfi are fine everything is close together

Only because you said you like to be on the move, I would not allocate a whole day to Ravello and to Positano. That statement depends on the fact that you are staying in Amalfi, so they are easier to get to than if you were in Sorrento. They are both nice towns, but unless you are really looking forward to your mornings and evenings in Amalfi, you might try to do more each day. (Let me say that I adored Ravello - I don't mean to say it isn't worth a visit!) It could also be said that the view from Amalfi is similar to the view from Positano! I think they all have pebble beaches, however. (Not Ravello, of course.)

Check on ferries in late September. Frequency might decrease, and you might have to go to Positano or even Sorrento to get the departures you want. We were there in high season. Be sure to check for multiple ferry companies that don't share business listings together. Also be aware that ferry trips can be affected or cancelled by rough water. There may be smaller boats in use by the end of September, and note that Positano cannot accept as large boats as Sorrento and Salerno can.

It would make more sense to do in this order.

Naples-Ischia.

Ischia-Capri.

Capri-Sorrento.

Sorrento-Amalfi.

Amalfi-Salerno.

You'll have less travel time between locations and a better selection of ferry times.

Your time in AC looks reasonable.

Thanks for your input guys—so sounds like maybe I can fit most of this in, and should try go to Ischia first. I agree it would make more sense to visit Capri from Ischia or Sorrento, but the friends we’re meeting up with in Amalfi really want to go, so my hands are kind of tied there.

Any idea how I can fit Naples in? I’m thinking maybe we could put our luggage in storage when we arrive at the train station and do a few hours in Naples before heading over to the ferry for Ischia.

Tim—you mentioned we wouldn’t need to allocate full days to visits to Positano and Ravello; any ideas what we could do in addition? Maybe like a hike or another town we should tack on?

A fun thing to do in Capri is rent a boat for a few hours by yourself and just tool around the island...look up banana sports rentals

How are you arriving Naples? Plane or train?

If this is your arrival day, You could eleminate Sorrento do Naples your first day and Pompeii the second.

Naples. 2 N.

Ischia 2 N.

Amalfi. 4N

There's a nice walk/hike between Ravello and Amalfi hitting the village of Atrani between the two.

There's also the Path of the Gods hike between
Agerola and Positano. Takes 3-4 hours. There's info for both on the Positano.com site.

Cute beach towns further south. Minori, Maiori, and Vietri sul Mare. All easily reached by ferry and bus.

Travel mar is the ferry company to connect these towns from Amalfi.

I don't know the small towns, only the big destinations already named. I was trying to compare your list items "Naples and "Pompeii" with "Ravello", for example. Naples or Pompeii are each worth a full day. Ravello and Positano have less to offer. (Opinion.) OTOH if you become a big group, with your friends, then less can be accomplished in a day.

Positano may be a nice place to stay, but as a day trip destination it is very ho-hum. It is mostly shops vending VERY touristy wares to folks with money to spare. We left after half a day.

Since you start off in Naples, why not spend the day there, thus eliminating the return on day 2? Between the train rides and the actual visit to Pompeii, most people would think that’s enough for that day. If you feel that you are done with Pompeii, you could always hop back on the Circumvesiana and visit Herculaneum.
Salerno is worthy of some of your time.
