Need Help Planning Vatican/St. Peters

Planning a trip to Vatican City on day 2 of our trip to Italy. We're going on a Friday (May 27) so trying to figure out best way to see St. Peter's, Sistine Chapel/museum and do the Scavi tour. Any suggestions on order (I know you can do museum at night on Fridays) and are the Scavi tours timed as well? I know you have to request separately. We were planning to head to Vatican City in the afternoon so didn't want be stuck with an early Scavi time. Thoughts? Just assumed we'd eat a late lunch and an even later dinner, even though I'm worried about being not adjusted to Italy time and starving by then. :)

Also if we're staying late in VC, will three women getting back to the Monti neighborhood alone be safe? Taxi best that time of night or metro? Any recommendations for eating late in VC? Last time I went it was early am.

Thanks,
Tracy

Odds of getting a Scavi Tour this late are pretty much zilch. They book out many weeks in advance. You try to book on the Vatican web page. Maybe you will get lucky. Try it and if you do, then book your Vatican Museums tickets for a couple of hours after the end of the Scavi tour if possible. The Scavi ends in St. Peters and so do that then and then head on to the Museums -- it is about a 20 minutes walk from St. Peters to the entrance of the Museums.

Since you probably won't be doing the Scavi Tour, I would plan to get the best reservation you can for museum entry preferably just after lunch or early and then do St. Peters before or after that. The Museum reservations also book out but your odds are better there, but I'd get right on it. You may have to take what you can get in times there and then work St. Peters in when you can.

There is a taxi stand at the entrance to Piazza San Pietro. You will be fine taking a taxi.
