Need help on where to stay Salerno or Sorrento

We are a family of four that have 5-6 days to do the Amalfi Coast area. We plan on going to Paestum, Pompeii, Positano, Capri and whatever else we can fit in.
Need to know which town to use as a base Salerno or Sorrento, or if another town would be better.
Thanks for the help

Your inclusion of both Paestum and Pompeii makes it very hard to answer the question. Pompeii is an annoying trip from Paestum and Paestum is an annoying trip from Sorrento. I've never been to Salerno, but it doesn't sound as attractive as Sorrento. I will say that some people recommend taking the long-distance railroad from Salerno to the modern city of Pompeii, and taking a long walk or a cab drive to a less-used entrance to ancient Pompeii (Pompeii Scavi). The beat-up commuter railroad from Sorrento is cheaper and stops almost in front of the most popular entrance to the ancient city of Pompeii.

You didn't give the time of year (which affects crowding, crushing heat, and ferry schedules - a lot) or whether you plan to use a car, which many people don't recommend for those trips. You might do well to use the search box at the top of the page to read the many posts about this topic. (Alas, the search box doesn't work as well as I would like. Try different search terms.)

Yes i know the distance of two of the trips makes it a hard question. We travel last minute and will be there at end of the week. Didn't know which trip would be more difficult Sorrento to Paestum or the Salerno to Pompeii.
Will be using public transportation unless you think tour/guide would be worth the money.
Thanks

I would spend four nights in Sorrento and two nights in Paestum. Hotel owners in Paestum will pick you up and drop you off at the train station.

You will have to go back to Naples for the train to Paestum.

Sorrento would be my choice as a base.
