Need help in transport planning.

Hi there, I am planning a trip for my husband and myself. We are planning on a 17 day trip, intending to cover Italy and Switzerland, in December this year. We bought our return tickets already, we will start and end in Rome. I need help with transport.
1) For Italy Eurail pass, does it cover all types of train including high speed train?
2) If we do get the pass, we need to buy a separate ticket for Italy-switzerland (cross country) ticket is it?
3) We intend to tour Jungfrau region and Zurich. Would it be better (cost wise) then to buy cross country train tickets from Milan to Lugano, then from Lugano, to use the Swiss pass to get us to Interlaken?
4) To travel between Italy and Switzerland, is Milan the only travel point between the two countries? If so, that will mean we have to bypass Milan twice since our return flight is from Rome.

When i did an estimate calculation on the tickets using trenitalia's website (based on July's price as they dun hv qoutes for December), the price came up to be more than the 2nd class saver pass $140. So i am tempted to buy the pass. we'll be travelling:
rome-florence; florence-venice; venice to milan; then to switzerland, then from switzerland back to milan, milan-rome. technically, if we dun count the cross-country tickets, it's 4 day's travel. trenitalia's price r ex for point to point when sum up. more than $140 euro.
