Need Help Figuring out Change to Itinerary

I will be traveling in Italy with a friend in June. After visiting Florence, we are renting a car from Hertz (at the Florence Airport) to explore Tuscany and Umbria. We will stay in Assisi for 4 nights and I had planned to return the car at the Perugia railway station and then head to Salerno. We will not be going to Salerno now and will need to head back to Milan. I am wondering where I should return the car. I was reading in the RS Guide Book (2018) that navigating the rental return location at the Florence Airport is very confusing.

Here are the options I see: (1) Return to Florence Airport and take the train to Milan, (2) Return the car to a Hertz location in Umbria/Tuscany: Perugia, Spoleto, Orvieto, Arezzo, OR (3) Drive back to Milan (5 hours) and stop in Bologna for lunch!

If I return the car to Orvieto, we could spend the day there or possibly spend the night before taking the 5-hour train trip back to Milan.

I am reaching out to the many experienced travelers on this forum for some much appreciated advice!

Yup. Took us 4 tries to find it, 3 of us looking, one driving, and a GPS to boot! Ridiculous! Even my Italian friends had trouble!

Returning in Orvieto is so easy and it is a nice place to while away a half day. Beats driving all the way to Milano!

Thanks Andrew. I’m not planning g to explore Tuscany from Assisi, just Umbria.

Thanks, Laurel. I’ve been leaning toward returning in Orvieto and spending a half day there! Seems like the easiest solution.
