There is no train station in Positano.

In season you would take a direct train from Venezia (S.Lucia or Mestre station) to Salerno and a ferry from Salerno to Positano. Then a train from Salerno to Roma (Termini, Tiburtina or Trastevere depending on where you are staying).

What site are you searching train fares on? Italo's non refundable tickets for advance purchases are usually a little cheaper than flying. A lot cheaper if you consider the transfer costs and times to\from both airports.

You do realize how far it is from Venice to Positano, right? You'll spend the better part of a day getting from one to another. Going by train/ferry will probably take around 9 hours hotel to hotel. Flying should save a few hours, but that option involves more changes of transportation or a big additional cost if you take a private car from the Naples airport to Positano. If flying to Naples, direct bus from airport to Sorrento and another bus to Positano is better than going through Salerno. You'll likely want to get off at the second bus stop in Positano, which is at the bottom of town. The first stop is at the top of town, and it's a long walk down with hundreds of stair steps to navigate.

Easyjet has flights at both 7:00 and one at 8:40.
A month from now out of VCE.

The 8:40 should be easy to reach if you leave Venice by 6:00. You only need to be at the airport 1-1 1/2 hours before this flight.

Do not use Ryanair, while it's usually less expensive, it requires an additional 50 minutes to reach the terminal.

To get from the Naples airport to Positano, look here.

How many days/nights is your trip?

Looking at your previous posts, if you have only 7-10 days total, your itinerary looks too spread out, geographically.

Venice to Positano will take a day. Positano to Rome will eat up most of a day.

From Positano you need to go to Naples or Salerno to get a train to Rome.

Joe, I think those itineraries were for previous trips: note the posting dates?
But yes, Venice to Positano is going to eat some time. Also, if you happen to be heading back to Rome for a flight home, you don't want to be in Positano the night before that flight.

The train from Venice to Naples is you best option - any day of the week IMO. The journey time is only 5hs 10min. Sure the flight time is only 1hr 15min, however you have to factor in that you need to get to Venice Airport from the island, you also need to be there at a particular time before the flight. Then there is the hassle of security, luggage etc etc - all very painfull. With the train just rock up to the station (on the island) 10 or so minutes before departure, buy a nice bottle of wine, and some nibbles to eat on the train. Board the train, sit back, have a glass of wine and enjoy the scenery. Then arrive at Naples Train station 5hrs later, nice and relaxed. From there you can catch another train to Sorento, and then a local bus/taxi/ferry to Positano, or whatever - it is no quicker to fly, just way more stressful
