We always try to bring home a little something for our cat sitters two daughters. Any ideas for smal gifts from Italy that a.early teen might like? We will be in Rome, Le Marche and Umbria. Thank you!
A cute purse? A locker magnet? Some cookies or candy?
The majority of gold jewelry manufactured for consumption in the US comes from Italy. Also, cameos are unique.
Everywhere I've traveled in Europe, I've seen costume jewelry as well as more expensive stuff. If you stumble upon a street market, you may well be able to buy from the jewelry-maker. Prices can be very low. Cute tote bags (canvas or other fabrics) are also common. Both of these ideas sort of require you to make an assumption about the girls' taste, however.
Teen girls are forever washing their hair, so maybe some Italian shampoo would seem exotic.
Thank you for the great suggestions. I noticed there’s a Pylones store in Rome. The Pylones stores in Paris had fun gifts. Any impressions if their gifts would be too un-Italian?
I bought Murano glass pendants for my 2 daughter in laws. They were very happy with them. Just make sure you buy real Murano glass. (But I guess they wouldn't have known) But I wanted to buy them in Murano, to make sure.
The OP wants to buy “a little something for her cat sitter’s daughters”. who are in their early teens. Gold jewellery and Murano glass seem inappropriate to me. These are kids!
I always have an easier time finding souvenirs for my daughter than for my boys. Last year I purchased some unique macrame bracelets with colorful beads while visiting Spello. I also got a small ceramic container with a cover in Siena. The store owner had beautiful ceramics which are all handmade & painted by a ceramic artist in Deruta.
In Umbria you can find nice olive oil soaps, however this may not be a popular gift for teens.
Enjoy your trip!
On our last trip (not to Italy), my 13-year-old daughter shopped for small ceramic bowls (to hold things on her dresser), hair do-dads unique to the location, bracelets, earrings, herbal teas, candy, and location-specific stickers to put on water bottles. She would have loved a gold bracelet or a glass pendant if we had been in Italy.
When we were in Italy in June, my niece was buying gifts for girls around the same age. The favorite gifts were:
- Vespa key chains
- T-shirts
- Italian candy in hard tins (easy to transport & fun)
Leather bracelets! My older teen daughter bought 2 for herself and her twin brother bought 1. Leather is in for teens :)
Thanks for all the suggestions. I got many great ideas and should be able to find something easily.
Pope stuff!
Pope refrigerator magnets. Pope t-shirts. Pope Christmas ornaments. Pope hats. Pope dishes. The list is endless...
Last time I was over I bought some nice amber bracelets for my niece (then age 13). She preferred the inlaid box I put them in. Her mother preferred the amber. Go figure...
Earrings? Small glass animals?
Becky,
You mention Umbria. Will you be visiting Orvieto? Someone mentioned "little ceramic bowls" - I agree they can be used for rings, etc. Each one would be hand painted and unique. Also, leather bracelets - my teen cousins love that sort of stuff. Maybe a leather keychain? I love bracelets, lol, so I would prefer a bracelet.
If you go to Orvieto, this artisan has some very good reviews. Bottega Artigiana Polifemo Cuoio
Corso Cavour 237, 05018, Orvieto, Italy +39 339 222 4897 (Different items - small to large; different price ranges.)
I bought my granddaughters lipstick - an Italian brand- and they loved it! They save their "special" lipstick for big occasions...even if its just going out to dinner! They also loved the leather bracelets, but the list is endless.
My teen and preteen granddaughters love anything I bring back that is related to skin/personal care or make up basics and especially if it's written in Italian (or any other language). I try to find small sizes. Grocery stores and the pharmacies are both good sources for these little gifts.
