Need for cash vs credit cards for optional musuem sights?

We are taking the VFR tour Oct. 2-11th and wondering if we will need cash vs. credit cards to pay for some of the exhibits etc. in places (besides the entrance fee), e.g., the optional sights inside St. Marks Basillica. I am assuming th major sights all take credit card to pay for admission. Any advice about this is welcome!

Always keep some cash euros small bills 20's 10's and 5's 2 and 1 euro coins all the time;
but try to pay everything with a credit card first.
Some toilets require coins to enter also

When we were there in 2012, the Doge's Palace would not accept a credit card.

Important what Jazz+Travels said -- always carry €1 and €0.50 coins for those emergency toilet visits!

In some churches you will visit, you’ll occasionally find an altar that’s dimly lit. Next to it you’ll notice a coin box. For a small fee, deposit some coins and the altar will be illuminated for 5 minutes or so. If you want to get a €1 bottle of water as you’re walking around, cash is king. Same for snacks and street food.
