need for car in dolomites

we are going to Bolzano, Castelrotto. from Milan, spending 2 days. Do we need a car once there, or can we just use public transportation?

I was in the Dolomites for about 5 days last fall. I stayed in Castelrotto most of the time. If I could do it over again I would have skipped the car. You can take the bus from Bolzano to Castelrotto and then take buses from there to different spots to hike.

Driving in the mountains was a bit scary with the tight turns, narrow roads and suicidal motorcylists who seem to be having a big competition amongst themselves to see who can pass the most cars every day. It was a little too stressful for me.

Thank you,
What about getting there from Milan and then to go to Vence from Castelrotto? Is the public transportation sufficient?

We were in Castelrotto for 3 days last fall. I'd disagree about the car. While there is public transport to/from hiking areas, times aren't always convenient and there are some things (like taking the mountain scenic road by bus) that are available only a couple of times a week. It's true that the mountain road to Bolzano is curvy and can be tricky but we've decided if we go back to Castelrotto we'll get a car. To get to Venice from C. you need to take a bus (1 hr) to Bolzano and a train from there, which will take around half a day. I'd rather drive and turn the car in at Venice.

I would take the car. The car is ready when you are. No waiting and you can stop anytime you want for photos, picnics etc.
