Need Beach Town Advice for Itinerary

We will be in Italy for two weeks in September, 2012. We (my 18 year old daughter and I) want to include a day or at the beach in our travel plans. We can't decide which would be better for us - Pescara on the Adriatic sea side or Sestri Levante on the Ligurian side. The ideal area would have the following:
less crowds, shopping, snorkeling, scenic and available by train/bus/walking. We can't visit both places so any opinions/advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated. This will be our first visit to Italy. This will be our first visit to Italy. Thank you.

I don't know anything about Pescara, but we were in Sestri Levante in September. It's easily accessible by train, but the beaches that we saw were a mess. It looked like a bunch of the beach had been washed away and what was left had been covered up by debris. Not sure what the cause was, but I'd definitely try to get an update on the situation before I made plans to do beach things there.
