Need assistance in Montepulciano

We are doing the Rick Steves 21 day tour and have spent 3 nights in Montepulciano without a car. The 2015 Italy guide says that "Montepulciano is the best home base for those without a car." and we were fine getting here, walking the city, etc. but are having trouble leaving and leaving on a Sunday morning might be making it more difficult.

We bought train tickets at the TI from the Montepulciano train station to Chiusi and then on to Orvieto where our next Air BNB host is picking up us. Our problem is getting from the top of the hill in Montepulciano to the Montepulciano train station which is 8.5 kilometers. We have called and e-mailed taxis, tried the numbers in the 2015 Italy guide, and the TI called three taxis this morning and no answer - everyone is busy and we aren't sure they even operate on Sunday morning. Messages and e-mails go unanswered.

There are no buses that run on Sunday that we could use to reach the train station. We have been told this by the TI and we went to the train station snack bar where they sell tickets and the man said the same thing. The only way to get to the train station on Sunday is by taxi.

Our AirBNB host was nice upon our arrival, but is now very busy as he is a chef and wedding planner and has a large wedding going on and can't give us a ride or any help at all. Help from anyone reading this would be appreciated.

BTW, Rick Steves was here a month ago as we saw a photo and note posted in Ramio's which is Cesare's workshop.

I had a similar experience in Metaponto a couple of years ago, missed a bus connection to Matera. No taxis anywhere. I asked the barista at the station bar if she knew someone who would drive me to Matera and she found someone. Baristas are your friends.

Zoe thanks for your help. We did something similar and we think we are set. Others should be careful on Sunday when the buses don't run. Thanks.
